Mums neighbours potentially smoking cannabis?

My parents live in a semi detached house. The bought it off the council years ago. Some new neighbours moved in a couple of years ago and although they are fairly pleasant, since they moved in a distinct smell of weed has been in certain rooms of the house adjacent to next door, including the one my son sleeps in when he stays.
She’s had her round to see if ‘her house was getting the same smell that she couldn’t work our what it was’ in the hope it might drop the hint but it didn’t.
Where does mum stand? I know people can do what they want in their own homes but neighbours shouldn’t have to breathe it in!
Please no judging on this, I’m honestly just wondering what mum can do.

Sounds more like growing than smoking

Talkthirtytome · 16/11/2019 22:20

@Bibyebaby how can you tell the difference?

Realistically? No one's really going to give much of a stuff.

Moondancer73 · 16/11/2019 22:29

Buy an air freshener that sprays regularly for your mum and mind your own business?

Talkthirtytome · 16/11/2019 22:31

It’s really getting her down as it can be quite strong some days. She’s been asking me what I thought she could do.
She has air fresheners thanks!!

If they're growing you'll smell it constantly. Unless it's in the loft one window will have blind permanently down or be covered. You'll also likely hear a fan going. If it's smoked then you'll likely find the smell strongest for a few hours when they're smoking it. You can contact Police, if it's a grow they might be interested but if they're just smoking whilst possession is illegal (it is a Class B drug) they're unlikely to be able to catch them at it. They might have a word but they probably wouldn't stop

Lunafortheloveogod · 16/11/2019 22:44

Absolutely no Snow on the roof when everyone else has, blacked out windows (be it curtains that never ever open n no sign of light at the other side (they’ll be covered on the inside so no one can see the uv lights) are good signs of growing.

Smoking it usually wouldn’t spread through walls, unless their house is absolutely reeking. Maybe the lifts are joined? Like it’s letting the smell through but even that’s just a theory.

If it’s possibly just the room they smoke in I’d be more direct n ask them if they could open the window/smoke in another room. You don’t need to say it’s weed just smoke smell seeping through.

Talkthirtytome · 16/11/2019 22:44

@Sforsh49 Thank you for your help. Some days it’s stronger than others which makes me think it is smoking rather than growing. She’s embarrassed to have anyone around because of it.
It just seems so unfair as she has been in the house over 30 years.

@Lunafortheloveogod I have no idea but it’s a very distinctive smell isn’t it and it only appeared when they moved it.
I’ll suggest to her to say to them that she thinks it’s a smoke smell and would it be possible for them to open windows or not smoke in the rooms that are joined on to see if it makes a difference as it’s making her grandsons bedroom smell.

Ooo I'd love that 😆 the smell is glorious!

Talkthirtytome · 16/11/2019 23:20

@Cecilandsnail Grin haha! My friends son (7) was walking to school and smelt someone smoking and and said “mummy, what’s that lovely smell?” Still tickles me to this day!

Somewhat different, but one of my neighbours smokes loads in his house (I’m mid terrace) and I used to absolutely reek of stale ciragettes in my bedroom. Awful! One day I went round the skirting boards, coving, corners of the carpet and filled every little gap in with caulk, also blocked up the old unused airbrick (with clear plastic sheeting so I can make sure to remove it should there be condensation issues - non so far). No more smells! I get the tiniest bit every now and then but it’s improved dramatically. Maybe an option for your mum? Oh, and I’m also sure my neighbour hasn’t stopped smoking in his house, he’s elderly and I go round every now and then to help him with things.

filka · 17/11/2019 09:19

In a semi-detached or terraced house the party wall in the loft is rarely airtight - more likely it has huge gaps where the bricks meet the wooden roof timbers, maybe bricks missing etc.

Actually if you were to go up without putting the lights on you might be able to see light through those gaps.

mrssoap · 17/11/2019 09:25

I hate the smell of weed so I do sympathise, however you could tell the police who to be honest probably won't do anything about it! My ex husband smoked a lot, someone reported him to the police and they didn't do anything at all. One of the many reasons he's an ex!!

ceebeejeebies · 17/11/2019 09:29

I completely know how awful this is. Each to their own and everything, I really don't care what people get up to, but my downstairs neighbour makes my flat absolutely stink of it. The council are aware. Nobody can make him stop. And it's so so strong, I have to give a disclaimer to people that visit so they don't think it's me!

bullyingadvice2017 · 17/11/2019 09:42

If they are growing it will go in cycles. Not so smelly at first getting worse till it's ready to crop and dry. Stinks when it's ready. 12 week turnarounds on growing.
If smoking It will come and go. Is it worse when they are in in the evenings etc. I'd tell them that your mum's house stinks of weed and it's only since they moved in. They should ventilate their house better then if they have any manners.

SimonJT · 17/11/2019 09:50

I have hemp based filters in my heating system, my neighbour doesn’t. If I haven’t used my heating in a while it makes the flat next door smell like weed due to the way the heating systems vents are joined.

I did explain this to her the first time she knocked and even showed her my itemised receipt from the company. Yet we still had two visits from the police as she reported a cannabis farm on the property.

Talkthirtytome · 17/11/2019 23:47

Thank you everyone. I’ll suggest to her to try and have a check that everything is airtight etc. Some days it’s strong enough that you can smell it as soon as you walk through the door in rooms that aren’t even attached to next door. They are actually fairly pleasant people which makes it more difficult!
I think they must smoke it on an evening when the kids are in bed. I think mums best plan of action is probably to ask them if they smoke can they do so with windows open/in other rooms that aren’t joined on to hers and then if no improvement to either report to council which or check there are no gaps anywhere where it could be coming through. It started probably within a week of them moving in so it’s far too much of a coincidence.

You don't need to do anything. You can't stop them. Also it's a bit strange when it comes to the law as you can't buy it you can't ligally grow it although you can smoke it. If the police catches you smoking weed the can only take the spliff of you you might get serched but that's it. So there is nothing you can do about it.

Sforsh49 · 18/11/2019 08:57

Actually @Thatagain smoking it in a spliff is possession of a class b drug, so it is illegal, as by smoking it in the spliff you possess it, so actually the law says you can't smoke it
