Half-baked house - is it a bit weird?

The house has recently come onto the market. It looks to have an expensive kitchen, nice bathrooms but it needs work otherwise.

Is it just me, or is it strange that the vendors didn’t give it a lick of paint and some flooring? That would make it a nice family home vs a fixer upper, which is the impression that buyers might get now.

Maybe the owners have run out of money, and need to sell quickly.

CoolShoeshine · 14/11/2019 16:14

I see what you mean - extremely nice house however and it would be perfect for me as I love decorating but hate renovation works. I’m guessing they left in a hurry- perhaps had to relocate through work or similar- and didn’t get time to do all the finishing touches.

onalongsabbatical · 14/11/2019 16:15

In the middle of doing it up, something happened. Bankruptcy, relationship breakdown, death of someone, loads of reasons. It is what it is - it's a lovely house, btw.

Seeingadistance · 14/11/2019 16:15

You see this every so often. I always assume they’ve run out of money, underestimated the hassle of doing up a house, getting divorced - probably due to the cost and hassle.

Robs20 · 14/11/2019 16:16

It is a beautiful house! Maybe they are getting divorced/ ran out of money etc. I would buy this in a heartbeat!

BreakfastAtSquiffanys · 14/11/2019 16:17

Most probably owners have split up before they completed the renovation.

Bunnybigears · 14/11/2019 16:18

I would love that house. All the major bits are done and you can just have fun decorating the rest.

AFistfulofDolores1 · 14/11/2019 16:19

We sold a house like this. We broke up while doing it up and needed to get rid of it as part of the divorce settlement. Sometimes the reason can be quite mundane.

FabLaura · 14/11/2019 16:23

Oooh wow beautiful house. I would buy this cause the survey would show up anything horrific that might be why they stopped and sold on. The rest is totally manageable to do up.

peachgreen · 14/11/2019 16:24

Pretty much my dream state to get a house in!

Dinosauraddict · 14/11/2019 16:24

Having lived through a house renovation on a 5 bed semi detached Edwardian, I can definitely see a scenario where it's driven them to divorce - it was one of the most stressful things I've ever done!

Seeingadistance · 14/11/2019 16:25

It is a gorgeous house.

I love the hallway with the fireplace.

TokyoSushi · 14/11/2019 16:28

I also see your point, but I'd quite like it! They've done the most expensive bits and left all the decor which is the most fun part!

Probably run out of money/split up or similar

Ouchmyleg · 14/11/2019 16:33

I’d rather have the X amount reflected in the asking price than X amount spent on paint and carpets to someone else’s taste.

We’re about to get ours ready to sell and it needs plastered, painted and new carpets. I’m tempted to only do the plastering but will probably paint too.

JoJoSM2 · 14/11/2019 16:33

That’s what I’ve been thinking - ran out of money/split up - but it seems the house is only a few tins of paint/bit of carpet away from being presentable.

I can quite imagine spending £££ on the basement and loft, though. Cinema room, wine store... Grin

There could be a myriad of hidden nightmares in a house like this so as long as survey is good and there is no subsidence, damp or rot etc would buy a house like this even though I'd want to change kitchen. Stripping walls is the worst kind of job!

HotChoc10 · 14/11/2019 17:13

I love the bare wood floors! Would just sand them down and stain or varnish them.

legoiseverywhere · 14/11/2019 17:30

Its gorgeous, shame I don't want to live in Sutton.

I assume money issues or bereavement/divorce.

JoJoSM2 · 14/11/2019 18:09

@HotChoc10

Tbh, I’d also get the floors sanded. But if I was splitting up/out of money, I’d probably slosh on some pure brilliant white and get a cheap carpet throughout. I suppose it’s probably the last thing on someone’s mind when they’re going through divorce, though.

Looks great to me. You can just move in and decorate how ever you want.

BookishKitten · 14/11/2019 18:30

Usually lenders don't consider homes without kitchens are habitable, so won't lend the money. Sounds like they did the harder bits (kitchen and bathrooms) and then left (possible breakdown of relationship or business partnership). But in that postcode this is a good price... I'm not a fan of the kitchen tbh, but love absolutely love everything else.

Knittedfairies · 14/11/2019 18:45

That's a beautiful house! I'd much rather buy a house stripped right back like that than one with El Cheapo white emulsion and carpeting.

bluetue · 14/11/2019 18:47

They ran out of money/gave up with it, I have been tempted to do a similar thing with our house that we have been renovating for the past couple of years.

It's a beautiful house though, and at least no wallpaper to tear down or carpet to rip up!!!!!

TwattingDog · 14/11/2019 18:59

What a beautiful house!

The front paving looks to be resin bound stone. That's ££££.
