Intermittent Sulphur Smell

We moved into our 1930s semi a year ago. Ever since we moved in we've had intermittent sulphur smells in the kitchen and sometimes outside too. It lasts for about 5 minutes, then clears. It happens around once or twice a day, but there's no pattern to the timings and nothing obviously triggering it.

We know the foul drainpipe runs under the kitchen. Last year it got blocked. The company that unblocked it said it had a "belly" where water could collect. I've assumed that's what is causing the smell, so I haven't had it investigated any further, but as it's been getting worse lately (more frequent) I'm wondering if I should. It does seem odd to me that the smell only lasts a few minutes - I'd have thought pooled liquid would cause a permanent stink till it cleared.

Any advice?

If its intermittent then I'd probably be blaming my husband 😂 sorry that's not really helpful.
But you could get the pipes checked again. Does the smell come on after you do anything in particular? Like the tap has just been on/ flush loo/ washing machine filled etc. Anything that's taking water in or out could disturb the yuck water

Well DH/DS do get some suspicion sometimes, but often they're not around Grin

There's no pattern that I can make out.

Call out charge for the drain people is pretty high so I've been putting it off, but if nobody suggests what else it could be I'll have to give them a call.

@brabbleo When we moved in here I noticed a pong. Bleach didn't shift it, neither did disinfectant, or hot water.

In the end I used Spirits of Salts and after a couple of goes, it went.

I still need to use it from time to time, usually when the heating has been on as I think it dries out the pipes. I do every sink, toilet, shower and bath at the same time just to be sure.

Worth a try before you get involved in expense. It might just be dried out, so maybe try a lot of hot water first, then Spirits of Salts if it doesn't go.
