Why are moving companies SO expensive?

Just had a quote from one for packing & moving us for nearly a grand.

Is this normal?

Our last move was 3 packers for a day and 3 removal men for a day.

So six days of wages, plus on-costs (the extra that it costs the company to employ them: employers NI, pension, holiday pay).

If they provided boxes and packing materials (ours did) that runs to another couple of hundred.

Fuel for a big, very heavily laden, van.

Maintenance of a yard to keep vans, with associated business rates, etc.

Insurance for all your stuff while in their care, whilst being hefted about.

Plus all the overheads, admin etc.

How can it not be expensive?

Bluesheep8 · 16/09/2021 07:36

The company are registered with the BAR though, so they are a recognised firm.

Anyone can set themselves up with a van and register with the BAR.

Ozanj · 16/09/2021 08:46

It depends on what service you want. If you’re in England I know someone who is really cheap & can pass you details - but you effectively only get as many vans as you want and men to carry stuff out / in. You won’t get a packing or unpacking service or boxes.

readytosell · 16/09/2021 08:54

I'm having full packing service and moving a 3 bed house nearly 100 miles. For 900 quid, I thought that was fairly reasonable.

Everyone seems to want everything on the cheap these days.

Hire vans and do it yourselves if you want, but you're still looking at several hundreds not to mention the pain of actually packing, lifting and shifting.

maofteens · 16/09/2021 08:58

Get another couple quotes. But they have overheads - insurance for your stuff, staff, trucks, training, travel time etc etc. You aren't just paying for the hours they are in your home. And it's hard labour. I wouldn't want to do it.

EnjoyingTheSilence · 16/09/2021 09:08

Worth every single penny. Pack and move yourselves and then unpack see how stressful it is and then decide on whether it’s worth the money!

Also let’s break it down. On our last move we had 3 guys for two days about 7 hours a day. If you look at £10 an hour that alone is £410 (and I would hope they’re getting paid more than that) then there’s tax and NI on top of that, you’ve got the van costs, overnight storage, insurance and the business has to actually make money.

Why do people always want everything done on the cheap. Peoples time costs money.

Bythemillpond · 16/09/2021 09:12

We were quoted £2400 and even if we had gone with them we would still not be moved as they were fully booked till October.
We had to move ourselves
Even a neighbour who sold for nearly £2 million wanted to hire a removal company and go into a rental for 6-12 months so they could take their time choosing their next home ended up calling on family members to help put their furniture in storage via estate cars and one guy with a van who came to take the bigger stuff but was only available for a few hours on one particular day

TheGrumpyGoat · 16/09/2021 09:15

Yeah that sounds standard.
Historically we have moved house a lot (pitfalls of renting) including a move abroad and we’ve always done it ourselves. People always say doing it yourself is hideous but we’ve never really had a problem. We’ve never been able to afford professional movers.

purplesequins · 16/09/2021 09:16

it's a reasonable price.
what were you expecting?

if you consider just the hours per mover x minimum wage (hopefully their wage is higher!) plus cost for the van/lorry, parking permit, packaging material.

ineedaholidayandwine · 16/09/2021 09:42

Yep we paid just under a grand to pack up a 3 bed house inc loft, shed and all garden furniture etc which included a wooden wendy house, they were brilliant, so fast, no breakages, unloaded fast and re assembled beds for us, moved dining table/welsh dresser whole to save time (bloody strong bloke's, my dresser was full of dvd's!)
They packed a couple of days before, on moving day arrived at 8:30, one carried on with final packing bits while the other 2 started loading, were done by 12:30.
Made everything soooo much easier, all i had to do was make beds and plug in the tv and order a takeaway :-)
Good luck with the move OP

Aha! ZOMBIE THREAD serially revived by spammers it seems.

Jmaho · 16/09/2021 10:08

We paid about 750 3 years ago. Moving only. Moved from a 3 bed semi to 4 bed detached over 30 mins away. Having done all previous moves ourselves I can honestly say it was the best money we ever spent! We were out of the old house by midday and by 5 on the evening the new house was in a great state. All beds and furniture up. Honestly worth it

That is incredibly cheap!

We are moving London 2 bed flat to a 5 bed house 55 months away - £2.3k inc vat + packing.
I got about 10 quotes and the cheapest was £1.9k most expensive £4k

Frauhubert · 17/09/2021 08:56

I paid £400 for a one bedroom flat with furniture. This included deconstruction of a huge wardrobe and putting in back together in the new place, the same with bed frame and a kitchen table. But it was before brexit, it was a Polish guy with 2 young sons helping. Those days are over

Hebeee · 17/09/2021 13:17

Lol at the poster who said they had 2 boxes to move (plus furniture, obviously) 😂 Our last few moves have involved between 90 and 200 boxes....but we do have more stuff than most people 🙄

We've never used a packing service, but have done four long distance moves (100-250 miles) and have used everything from self drive van hire through man and van to big expensive removal co. The most we ever paid (200+ miles from a 3500 sq ft house, using a well known company) was around £4300 in 2007.

When we did the self drive move it took 7 journeys to get a slightly smaller amount moved. We'd had quotes up to £2500, but even DIYing it still cost close to £2k.

Last-but-one move we used a smaller, local firm - it took the four blokes 5 days in total (3 to load the three massive vans plus 2 to drive there/unload). This cost around £3.5k for a large five bed house, 150 miles one way. It included loads of garden stuff, ie around 100 potted plants and the usual outdoor furniture/shed contents BBQ etc. The garden stuff alone took up one van!

More recently (2018) we did another long distance move from England to Wales and decided to use a man and van as we were putting our stuff into storage as we'd sold but not yet purchased. This was done gradually over a couple of weeks and was supposed to be the cheaper option....yet still cost around £1500 due to the sheer quantity of large furniture/boxes 🙄

If we move again, it'll be removers all the way as they're definitely worth every penny imho.....

EdgeOfTheSky · 17/09/2021 14:24

HeeBee the problem for many people with some of your moves though is that if you are selling and buying in one transaction there is never a point when you own both houses, so it all has to go in one go. Could be multiple vehicles simultaneously, though.

RosesAndHellebores · 17/09/2021 14:33

Vehicle fleet
Insurance (if they pack and something valuable breaks, they are liable)
Storage
Wages
Tax and Vat

Last time we had some stuff collected from storage, four chaps packed for a whole day and loaded everything that wasn't essential. Came back at 8am the next morning for beds, chairs last bits etc. Waited outside new house from 12.30 until 4.45 - there was a problem with the funds transfer. Left at 8.30pm once unloaded. We were minutes away from them going back to the depot and returning the following day. DH gave them £200 I think as a mark of our gratitude.

Cost about £3k worth every single penny.

MeAndDebbieMcGee · 17/09/2021 14:36

Not as expensive as pissing estate agents and unlike estate agents at least they do actually do some (a lot of) work.

m0therofdragons · 17/09/2021 15:32

Worth every penny! Honestly, I was so completely in love with our removal men (as was dh). After a hugely stressful time getting to the moving date the actual move was a breeze because of them. We paid for beds to be put together too. We started with 3 men but by the end of the day (as they finished other smaller jobs) others arrived to help so we had 11 by the end.

We used an on line estate agent for £99
