Boilers- Which one?

We need a new boiler and in our last two houses our plumber has always gone with a Worcester Bosch. In this house we’re using a new plumber who has recommended a Baxi 824. Does anyone know about this make? Any good or bad experiences?

Worcester is a better brand, better made & a good back up service. More expensive, but worth it. Plumber has probably recommended Baxi as he will make more profit out of it.

OublietteBravo · 12/11/2019 21:00

We went with Worcester Bosch. Our plumber initially tried to convince us to go with a different brand “because it was modular and easier to fix.” Which just suggested that that brand broke more often. In any case, I wanted a boiler that was easy to use rather than easy to fix Hmm

Interesting replies so far! I guess all plumbers have their favourite brand I guess. I’m sure we paid about £3/3500 for our last two boilers. This one is coming in quite a bit cheaper which slightly worries me!

We went for a combi and love it, it’s a oil/wood combo. We mainly run it on wood, but the oil kicks in if the fire goes out.

My plumber has always, and still does, rave about Vailant. Eight years in and only three services mine hasn’t let me down once.

NemophilistRebel · 12/11/2019 21:18

Worcester or Vailant

Wouldn’t go with any other brands

gwilt · 12/11/2019 21:21

We have Worcester Bosch. Great. Previously had Vaillant. Great.

Whyisitsodifficult · 12/11/2019 21:25

Any love for the Baxi out there!?

Vaillant (German engineering). I installed mine in 1989, I still have it.

BaronessBomburst · 12/11/2019 21:34

Vaillants go on forever. They're good quality - you could get 20 years or more out if it. When mine finally died we had to choose a cheaper option and went for an InterGas KombiKompact. I work in a related industry and it got the thumbs up from my company's engineering team. So far it's been great. No problems at all, although I'm only 18 months in.

Visit the Buildhub forum

Based around self builders but also renovators.

They will ask a few questions because different boulders suit different needs but you will get recommendations based on personal experience rather than ease of fitting or fitters profit.

Oh - and they just love giving advice

nellyitsmeagain · 12/11/2019 22:33

Worcester Bosch, valiant or Weismann according to the which guide

PigletJohn · 12/11/2019 23:31

"Weismann"

spelled Viessmann

very pleased with mine.

nellyitsmeagain · 12/11/2019 23:45

@PigletJohn thanks for the correction 😀

MillStone · 13/11/2019 07:05

Recently had a Valiant installed. 7 yr warranty because the plumber had a Valiant accreditation.

I was urged by the fitter to get an Ideal... but can't risk Blue, turning up on the driveway when the heating's on.

MarieG10 · 13/11/2019 12:44

Recent plumbers advice was Vallient or Worcester Bosch. British Gas engineer who attended to fix said Worcester Bosch. Said they get called out less to them but BG do have their own production line of Worcester boilers. To be fair he wasn't trying to sell me one

I think either really

However, do you really need a new boiler? I've had BG telling us for years we need a new one as it is on restricted parts list. 10 years on it is going great and actually the parts in restricted list are casing items and a couple of other parts which don't tend to break

Laughterisbest · 13/11/2019 13:06

I have a Viessmann and I'm very pleased with it. Only four years so far so can't talk about longevity.

PigletJohn · 13/11/2019 14:23

mines 14.

I've heard parts are not widely stocked, but that doesn't affect me as it's never needed any.

Toddlerteaplease · 13/11/2019 15:40

I couldn't find the brand for my boiler. Turns out it's a baxi one. Presumably the cheapest they do. As it was put in by my then landlady. I've had it five years and no problem with it.

dementedpixie · 13/11/2019 15:47

I have an Ideal boiler that's over 20 years old and get told there are no parts for it and is very inefficient). Next door got a Baxi fitted last year and seems happy with it. BG gave me a quote last year for a Vaillant. Would Vaillent be the better boiler?

NemophilistRebel · 13/11/2019 15:53

My last boiler was Ideal and it was shocking. It was only years old when it was beyond repair and cost a fortune before that just to keep it limping on

My Worcester has saved me loads on my gas bill

ConFusion360 · 13/11/2019 15:58

Vaillant (German engineering). I installed mine in 1989, I still have it.

Baxi (British engineering) ours was installed in 1972 and it's still heating the house (with a Hive controlling it).

DonPablo · 13/11/2019 16:02

I have an intergas boiler and hate it.

ConFusion360 · 13/11/2019 19:03

@DonPablo I have an intergas boiler and hate it.

If you don't mind me asking why is that? Intergas was the make that we had shortlisted to replace our ancient Baxi when it dies.

Saucery · 13/11/2019 19:07

We have a Baxi that’s 17 years old and still absolutely fine. Recently had a new company in to service it, they sell Worcester Bosch and we did ask if they honestly thought it was time for a replacement as we were prepared to do that. They said no, it was running just as it should and no reason to think it wouldn’t go on for longer.
