Talk to me about beds!

Partner and I sleep really badly together. Want to get two separate mattress ideally so that I don't have to feel him twitching all night.

Is zip and link the only answer?
Or will two single mattresses fit on a super king base?

Where do I get zip and links from?

I know Vi Spring can make you a mattress with 2 different sides so that could be another option.

mildlymiffed · 10/11/2019 17:07

Thanks @JoJoSM2 I'll check that out. Does anyone know if two mattress fit on a kingsize frame- as I have one of those... or is it that two singles fit on a super king frame?

You need a super king frame to accommodate two 3 foot (single) mattresses side by side. But the thing is- the super king frame is longer than a single or double bed so you can’t just put any old single mattresses on them or you’ll have a gap at the bottom.

We have zip and link but not currently zipped (-doesn’t make any difference whether they’re zipped or not imo).

I see! Maybe I'll bite the bullet and go for a zip and link then... any recommendations on where to get the base?

I’m actually in Ireland and I got our frame form a local furniture place so that’s probably no good to you.

It’s just this simple wooden base except the 6 foot version has a further support in the middle.

The base was relatively cheap, the mattresses were the expensive part. It’s been so worth it though, as I have managed to refrain from killing DH to date 😇 😂

@MayFayner I'm so with you. Can't bear more nights either booting him to the sofa or me trudging off...

Hypnos do zip and link with different firmness for each sleeper. Ours are 3’x6’6”. I have medium soft and DH has firm. If you zip them they don’t move on the frame. The bed frame is also linked which makes moving for decorating much easier than trying to move one frame. Fabulous beds,

Mattress size depends on whether it's uk, or eu/IKEA size.
You could always use two UK "small single" ie 75cm on a UK king size bed ie 150cm.

johnd2 · 11/11/2019 11:45

Sorry and to clarify the extra 10cm you would have to pack out with pillows if it moves around, as king is 200cm long

johnd2 · 11/11/2019 11:49

Also looks like two IKEA single fit perfectly on the IKEA super king www.ikea.com/gb/en/rooms/bedroom/mattress-size-guide-pub63d34391
However you'd need a giant room to accommodate that! 180x200

MayFayner · 11/11/2019 12:16

180 x 200 is the same as a super king afaik

I wouldn’t say our bedroom is giant- more’s the pity! I think our bedroom is about 3.9m x 3m and the bed is fine, loads of room each side and plenty at the end to walk around.

seasidequayside · 11/11/2019 13:06

I have zip and link from John Lewis. I think it would make a difference for you OP as there's a definite feel of having your own space. You don't have to zip them together as they're too heavy to shift out of place.

Another suggestions is separate duvets. I haven't tried this, but I know people who say it helps if their partner's moving around disturbs their sleep.

UnfamousPoster · 11/11/2019 16:56

We have a superking with a good quality pocket sprung and memory foam topped mattress. My DP is a fidget-arse who has to get up for at least 1 wee per night, but I can honestly say I don't feel him moving in bed at all. In our previous beds I've always been woken up by him going to the loo, but I don't wake up at all now.

Even with Zip & Link beds though I would say that how you both sleep might make a difference. I'm an edge hugger, so am miles away from my DP (literally can't even reach him with my arm stretched out fully, which is a pain when he's snoring and needs a nudge!). If your DP is a middle of the bed sleeper, even in a super king you might be disturbed purely by the fact he's close enough to you.

mildlymiffed · 11/11/2019 17:49

Thanks for your input. I have a king size frame which I'm reluctant to get rid of- as I love it. So have started researching king size zip and link mattresses. It's so confusing!

Get a good quality pocket sprung mattress. It won't be cheap, but it is well worth the money and you'll get a great night's sleep.
