Breakfast bar quartz overhang

Hello!

Mid way through our rear extension now, and trying to make some final decisions about our peninsular worktop.

See below for our final design! The peninsular has shallow cabinets on the other side of where the oven and hob are. We then plan to have a quartz worktop with an overhang to create a breakfast bar with seating.

Given this will be at countertop height (approx 720), what overhang would you recommend? So far we've gone for 30cm, but worried it might stick out too much, but then don't want it to become not functional for comfortable seating!

Also - I've heard different advice from people about worktop depth. Some have said if we are having 30cm overhang we need to have a 3cm depth worktop, others have said 2cm would be fine!? Really don't want to have problems further down the line for such an expensive worktop!

Any thoughts about edging profiles? My partner quite likes a Sharknose - but I'm worried it looks a bit too cool, to go with our grey shaker style kitchen, and will go out of fashion soonish.

Thanks for any help in advance!

30cms is the length of a ruler. I’m not sure that would be comfortable for one person to eat at (though from the diagram I can’t see where it will be).

Shark nose will look ok yet more designed to go with the true handleless kitchens to emphasize the look.
Also not many companies can do this with a radi corner so you will have to look into that on who you go with if you go for the shark nose.
30 cm is ok 35 would be better due to the handles you will have by your knee, not sure why you have untis under there anyhow as you have som many within the kitchen.
creating a feature for the bar out of pilasters would look so much more fitting with a shaker also leading into another room
Howdens for you i guess?

I don't get breakfast bars, and especially don't get them when they are right next to a table, explicitly designed for comfortable eating.

BlankTimes · 09/11/2019 17:04

Shouldn't the overhang include the depth of the legs at floor level of any chairs or stools you want to store there, otherwise they'll be permanently sticking out into the room?

Sit comfortably at a table and look at the distance horizontally from your toes to about threequarters of the way along your thighs. That's about the depth your overhang should be, or you'll be sitting sideways.

We've got a 30cm quartz overhang, it's 3cm deep. It's the perfect size for us.

We also have a table but the stools and tables get used for different things.

ShiningTor - did you need to put additional support underneath your quartz overhang?

@PuffinPippin no, we were told 30cm was fine without and it has been!

MiniCooperLover · 09/11/2019 20:17

I'm sorry I don't enjoy breakfast bars at all, the chairs get on my nerves ... do you really need it?

goldpendant · 09/11/2019 22:44

I don't mind a breakfast at but not if you're sat on top of the job, that just seems dangerous?!

We went for 40cm which was just about enough.
Also 750mm is table height, worktop would be more like 900mm.
Quartz is super strong so won't break easily even if it's thin.

Yoollyball · 10/11/2019 00:07

Can you design out the overhang - i alway feel they look a bit odd. You can use chunky side plinths to create an end to the units which makes it look a lot less like the thin worktop is hanging in the air

We have 30cm and its fine, but dont have a hob on the other side. If you have children and envisage them sitting there whilst you're cooking, I'd go for a bit wider.

As another pp said, worktop height in 900mm (from the floor). Its 720mm (usual cupboard height) plus the legs.

My kitchen (Victorian) is oddly configured-

our breakfast bar is 3cm deep but overhang only 20cm and it's fine. I was surprised it was so much shallower and measured twice.
DS's both 6'2 and sit there very comfortably.
However I do not have cupboards on the side with the overhang.

One thing I will add is that I wish I'd put another couple of sockets for charging things etc.

We use it a lot-and I always cook on it. Very sociable too.
