One is 1.5 one is 2.5. Both local firms with good reps. Do you think the cheaper one has forgotten something?.

Not necessarily - presumably they have broken it down and said what their service provides? Do these quotes include packing?

CatUnderTheStairs · 09/11/2019 13:33

Yes both include packing which is about the same in both quotes.

If you've checked the reviews, then I'd go with the first one!! We had the packing service and they also stored it for a couple of days - about £1700. About an hour and a half's journey away.

Bluesheep8 · 11/11/2019 13:11

Check their insurance offerings. Also check move schedules as if the duration of the move differs wildly it means over or under estimation by the rep. Packing service/boxes?

Bluesheep8 · 11/11/2019 13:13

Sorry, you said packing is included in both. Are either of them national firms op? They could actually be franchised and appear to be local (there is a good reason for my question)

LizzieMacQueen · 11/11/2019 13:22

One could be vat registered, the other not.

PanemEtCircenses · 11/11/2019 13:26

There have been massive differences in quotes every time I've moved. One staff member of a company I've used a few times but who then popped up working for a different company told me it's because the local ones tend to price 'dynamically' - according to how much other work they've got on. And at quiet times do it at cost, rather than having staff sitting around with nothing to do. Especially with how few house purchases are going through at the moment, I'd get as many quotes as possible.

CatUnderTheStairs · 11/11/2019 13:38

That's interesting Panem...so I might have just go lucky with a low quote and the timing.

If it's any help, I had quotes ranging from £1700 to £3700.

I went with the local £1700 quote and it was excellent service.

The £3700 quote for same move was Pickfords...

UnfamousPoster · 11/11/2019 16:49

Avoid Pickfords like the plague! I've heard too many horror stories.

@PanemEtCircenses point is valid. A lot of removal companies are struggling at the minute so they're quoting low to at least get some money in as some is better than none. Busy companies will often quote high for jobs that either require them to hire in more people or if they really aren't keen on the work.

If the cheaper company has good reviews and reputation I'd bite their hands off at the cheaper quote and consider yourself very lucky!

Keep the other one in reserve potentially though as I had to change removers last minute when my preferred one was fully booked on completion day.

Bluesheep8 · 11/11/2019 17:19

Busy companies will quote high because they are busy, simple as that. The profit margin the rep will be applying to the job is already predetermined before they walk through the door, based on how much work is being quoted for on your suggested date.

Bluesheep8 · 11/11/2019 17:20

And it's not possible to 'keep one in reserve'.

SunsetBoulevard3 · 11/11/2019 17:21

Having had an awful experience with a removal firm recently, I would say go on personal recommendation, not quotes.

Bluesheep8 · 11/11/2019 17:24

panem ALL removal firms quote like that, whether local or national.

foxatthewindow · 11/11/2019 17:25

There was a huge variation in quotes for us too, from about £1600 up to £4k for like for like service. As long as you use a company with BAR registration then you might not need insurance (check with your house insurance provider but most offer transit insurance up to 72h). We went with Bishops Move in the south east two months ago and they were pretty good, and one of the cheaper ones (the cheapest was simply removals who have shocking reviews)

Bluesheep8 · 11/11/2019 17:31

B.A.R registration means nothing. Literally anyone can buy a van and register with the B.A.R. Does the move schedule differ between them op? ie same number of days?

Bluesheep8 · 12/11/2019 10:07

One is 1.5 one is 2.5. Both local firms with good reps. Do you think the cheaper one has forgotten something?.

Are the move schedules different?
