Help me find bathroom tiles that will never look dated.

Which should mean white tiles I think. BUT my house is old and cold. I really want to avoid white. Bathrooms are small, low ceilings and not especially light.

I have white metro tiles with grey grout in the kitchen because it was all I could think of.
I don't think they make tiles I actually like!

Any clever ideas?

Maybe a herringbone marble or faux marble tile? White ish tiles with a light colour on any painted walls should work well.

Could you have tongue and groove panelling with just a few plain white bumpy, matt tiles where you need them?

Noflora · 06/11/2019 11:08

How about white tiles with a texture to give a less flat look? Keep the tiling to a minimum and paint a warm rich colour on the walls. Extra visual warmth can be achieved with wood effect floortiles or vinyl. Add rich coloured towels and bathmat and a plant .

This was as a result of a quick google for a bumpy reflective tile but you'll find more easily www.wickes.co.uk/Wickes-Bumpy-White-Ceramic-Tile-200-x-200mm/p/165916

The rooms are going to be all tiled. With window and door and airing cupboard on separate walls there isn't a wall left to paint.
I like the bumpy white tiles. I don't think they will date but I think going into a room with white tiles will feel chilly.
I will try to find some fake marvel and have a look
I'd like to have rich dark deep pile carpet in the bathroom but realise that's a bit yucky and not at all practical. So a warm fake wood and a big fluffy bath Matt should work.

Everything dates.

Got for something that makes you happy!

clutchingon · 06/11/2019 14:00

It's all going to date in the end. But I think we all go for
Much plainer designs. A 90's beige bathroom still looks nice just not on trend. Just go for quality fittings.

Wingedharpy · 07/11/2019 02:20

The thing is, as the tiles date, so will you and by the time you get to my age, you won't give a bugger anyway.
It's one of the many advantages of ageing that no-one ever tells you.😉

I think fake marble is a good idea. There are bathrooms from the 1930s that have this. Real marble stains so don't be tempted by that.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 07/11/2019 09:06

Ditto to what Wingedharpy said!

Other than that, I certainly wouldn't go for those 'metro' tiles, a fashion which IMO will def. look dated in future, and in any case make me think of old fashioned smelly public lavs.

9Greenbottles · 07/11/2019 09:16

Metro tiles could look dated but I remember in the 80's my ex PIL changing their bath but keeping the original bathroom tiles from a 30's semi (because they were tight with money, not for the aesthetics) and I thought at that stage the whole bathroom looked contemporary. If they are still alive, it would still look contemporary.

We have what sounds like a similar sort of set up. We went fir mixed tiles & grout colour, it gives height to the room & isn't at all cold, lovely & easy to clean too & the lower black grout is a godsend with a messy teen & hair dye.

We kept the accessories retro looking & with the metro tiles which are pretty retro & so even though they are in vogue now, shouldn't date so easily

I'll try & add a photo...

Help me find bathroom tiles that will never look dated.
RockinHippy · 07/11/2019 09:38

& winged is spot on 😂

Go with what you like, which is what we did, but it's also turned out to be very practical

RockinHippy · 07/11/2019 09:41

I should have added, the bevelled metro tiles are actually french art nouveau era styling, which is why they shouldn't date in an older house

Lindy2 · 07/11/2019 09:47

I think black and white is pretty timeless.

I'd do white tiles with either occassional black inserts, or plain white with a black textured border along the middle of the wall.
