Help me choose a new front door!

Having the front door replaced with Composite. Also all the glass around the front door too. Opting for same glass as is there now, just double glazed! Wanting to keep the lead lines on it too as its a 1930s semi so like the look of it being original. Currently thinking of either a duck egg blue colour door with silver hardware - but not sure it will look right as the black one does look ok (just old and draughty!) - should I stick to a dark colour? Any ideas of colours to definitely avoid?

red is prone to fade in sunlight.

black gets hot in sunlight, which can lead to warping.

I have a black composite front door which has faded a lot. It's south facing. I'd go duck egg.

Duck egg and Chartwell green are lovely, but quite fashionable at the moment.
Black & red are both traditional colours, but more likely to fade (although a decent company will give you a 10 year warranty on paint and 25 years on structure).

Thats really useful, thank you - I had no idea composite red/black could fade so thats really good advice, thanks!

They don't all fade, you just need to be sure that you have a good warranty with a reliable company.

It's a mixed bag in the window and door industry!

palacegirl77 · 04/11/2019 17:36

What would you say is a good warranty (against fading?)

Ooh, I’m wondering whether we might be able to get ours replaced. It’s been in less than 6 years.

Screamqueenz · 04/11/2019 17:47

I would have said 10 years for paint / surface is standard from the manufacturer.

In the first instance go back to the installer, because I think it's the person that you bought it off who has to put the claim back up the supply line.

I’ve had a south facing black composite door on for eight years, no fading.

If you Google www.google.co.uk/search?q=1930s+front+door+composite&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&hl=en-gb&client=safari you can some really lovely images of traditional style composite doors of that era.

I’m not seeing duck egg blue with the colour of the brickwork. I think sage green could look good if you’re after a more muted colour.

palacegirl77 · 04/11/2019 21:08

I think I agree - not sure the brick would tone well with Blue...something like this do you think?

I do quite like that sage green door. I also quite like the dark one in the pic below too. And the other green ones.
