Please could I have honest opinions on this property - I can't see the wood for the trees.

www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/property-65218728.html

We thought we wanted a period property but there's nothing around our area that doesn't need a ton of work or is £100k over budget.

We desperately need more space and this is such an amazing price and has the room that we need. Dh and dcs like it.

But...I'm not 100% sure, so obviously the opinion of a load of strangers on the internet is going to help with a life-changing decision.Grin

I’m confused about all the grass at the front. How do you access the front door, across the grass? Or from the side?

needmorespaceforthegiants · 02/11/2019 22:31

The driveway is to the right hand side of the picture with a path to the front door. The grass doesn't belong to the house. It's on the very edge of an estate and the grass separates the houses from the road. Hope that makes sense.

It’s hard to understand what the rooms are like because there’s so much clutter in all of them.

It seems soulless but inoffensive to me, but I like old (cold!) period houses. Decent size for Market Harborough though.

MoobaaMoobaa · 02/11/2019 22:31

I think as compromises go, it bloody good.

needmorespaceforthegiants · 02/11/2019 22:33

Soulless but inoffensive is where I'm at too...and the current decor is polar opposite to my taste which is hard to overcome.

Dh's opinion is that when you get all the stuff out the rooms are essentially white boxes which we can then make our own.

morningdread · 02/11/2019 22:33

I don't know anything about the area but it seems a good size. I'm very anti new build though so it seems a bit soulless to me.

morningdread · 02/11/2019 22:34

I like the higher ceilings & coving of period properties, they somehow give rooms more of an edge.

needmorespaceforthegiants · 02/11/2019 22:34

I'm anti new build too but it just makes a lot of sense for us right now. It would be a head not a heart move.

I think it looks a great house and I can't believe how cheap it is. In my neck of the woods, something like that would cost about £1 mill.

needmorespaceforthegiants · 02/11/2019 22:38

Sorry, last post was for morningdread.
It's a great price for round here too - a 4 bedroom renovated period property (ie not a wreck) would be £500k at least, which is way over budget. (But still a lot less than in many places, I realise.)

OP posts:
morningdread · 02/11/2019 22:41

Could you add what you have in that picture?

I'm very much into this type of thing but hey we all have to compromise. If this is the best option & makes sense go for it.

What is that your unsure of? the decor?

I've always been a period house person, but apart from the brown kitchen I actually love it Smile

So much light & space

TreaterAnita · 02/11/2019 22:41

It’s not to my taste as it is, and I’m not sure I could live with the wood grain effect kitchen, but assuming it’s in a nice area it seems like a good size for a decent price. The key for me would be how long you’re planning to stay there. If

I prefer the layout and garden of this one.

longearedbat · 02/11/2019 22:44

I am not a fan of open plan, although at least it has a separate sitting room. I think the actual working area of the kitchen looks rather small, but I appreciate it may be the angle of the photos. It all looks in good order though.
Must say, I love that enormous squashy sofa, although I know that's not part of the sale.

Whatsnewpussyhat · 02/11/2019 22:45

50 shades of beige.
Why on earth would anyone want brown kitchen worktops?.
House is fine. Looks in good condition.
I live in a period property that we are doing up bit by bit. It's a pain sometimes and expensive to do so unless you have extra money, this seems a decent option.

OverByYer · 02/11/2019 22:45

I think it’s nice, very family friendly. Love the open plan style. Not so keen on current decor

Didiusfalco · 02/11/2019 22:48

I really like it, it looks light and spacious. I’ve never lived in a new home but that one doesn’t look boxy. Would be way more where I live too.

BettyBooJustDoinTheDoo · 02/11/2019 22:50

On paper it should be a good house as it has a big kitchen diner family room plus a separate living room, however that kitchen set up is all wrong, is there a wall divider or something in the middle of the room? It’s bizarre, you effectively have a galley kitchen shoved in a corner, a K/D/F room should have the kitchen central to both the family area and the dining area for it to work well I think, also the style of it is a bit bachelor pad for my liking and the bathrooms are generic hotel style, inoffensive but not what I would choose.

DialANumber · 02/11/2019 22:55

We made a similar compromise and to date haven't regretted it. There's a lot to be said for being able to move in and get on with your life...

I don't plan to give up on the period property dream but have conceded that while the kids are young this makes more sense and when they move out we could get something smaller and have lots more options.

Seems an absolute bargain too!

needmorespaceforthegiants · 02/11/2019 22:55

The wall divider separates the kitchen and family room and has the oven and fridge freezer built into it - that's one of the things we quite like.

I would need to change the wood effect kitchen doors too and I do get the 50 shades of beige analogy.

The other one that a pp linked to is nice but the garden is north facing and it's a bit too far out of town.

OP posts:
Namaste6 · 02/11/2019 22:55

I quite like it OP. It has a kind of period feel about it from the outside. I agree with a PP in that there seems to be a bit of excess clutter and they have positioned their own furniture oddly. Also the kitchen feels like it's missing an end, but honestly, that could just be the camera angles. All in all though, an absolutely amazing price. That would be pushing 900k where I live.

needmorespaceforthegiants · 02/11/2019 22:57

Interesting that you haven't regretted it dial - I also think that our next move could be back to a period property.
It really is a bargain, even for where we live, and will give us a bit of leeway to change bits and pieces (like the bloody awful kitchen cupboard doors!!)

OP posts:
Snowglobes · 02/11/2019 22:58

If it’s going to be a long term home and you’re not getting ‘that’ feeling then keep looking but if it’s a stepping stone and ticks boxes then head over heart isn’t a bad idea.
