Pyronix Pet Immune PIR

Does anyone have Pyronix Pet Immune PIRs are part of their alarm system?

If so and you have a cat, do they work? I am reading some conflicting - but also old- opinions on various forums where the "pet sensitive" PIR really meant they didn't detect anything below a certain level. Our cat is a bit too active for that (think sits on top of doors) so we'd have a lot of false alarms if this is the case.

The pyronix web site mentions "Intelligent Pet Immune Technology" and that's kind of what the alarm man implied too. So if you have this and a cat, does it work please?

I had long chats with a couple of alarm companies about this recently and they told me that the “pet friendly” PIR sensors work by not covering the lowest 60cm or so of the room. So will not work if the cat jumps on anything higher than that. Good for dogs and non jumping cats though.

They said the sensors that claim not to be set off by anything under X kg are a con (and reviews I read back that up), ie cats will set these off if they jump.

Best way to ensure a cat proof alarm system is to use vibration sensors on all accessible windows and doors and have no PIR sensors. OR use PIR sensors in all but one room (which has to have vibration sensors) and shut cat in that room whenever you set the alarm.

Confused only 1 of the 4 alarm guys I spoke to have said they don't work. Well I'll find out soon enough I guess as we went for a PIR wireless one where the guy said it was dependant on weight and had fitted it into a house with cats previously. I told him ours jumped.

We get to try it for a week before paying so at least we can use that as a test period.

Good luck - let me know if it works ok as I might use those if it does!

I think we have just one... installed last week.

I have 2 house cats so our system is mainly shock sensors on windows and doors with one PIR in an area unlikely to be triggered by the cats.

Most installers tended to agree that pet friendly sensors are fine for dogs but not cats.

So far we have had no issues but I can disable the sensor if necessary.

I'll report back. As it's a wireless system we can add and remove easily so we are told. Also, this installer gives us a week before payment to make sure it all works for us.

We have those exact ones and it's basically a plastic insert.
The instructions themselves basically say they won't work if the animal is bigger than x kilogrammes and also don't point them anywhere the animal can get up high eg stairs.
There's nothing special about a pet from an alarms point of view apart from they are small and generally stay on the floor.

We have them and our cat doesn't set them off, even if she's walking on the backs of our conservatory sofas.

She is only little though (3.6kg). We put the alarm on once with a dog in the house and that didn't go well (for the neighbours anyway!).

We have our PIRs in the kitchen (where the cat only goes on the breakfast bar if we're there, and never on the worktops), living room (which is closed off to the cat if we're out), the conservatory (which has an additional type of sensor that detects heat AND movement, not just movement) and the upstairs hallway (where there's nothing high for her to jump on to).

If your cat does set it off you could put a little strip of electrical tape across the bottom of the sensor to just block the lower part of the beam?

When my neighbours got cats they had all their PIRs changes for pet friendly ones.
I have a key and their alarm code, I reckon I have to go and turn it off at least once a week!

soakedat3 · 05/11/2019 14:36

So the PIRs are all installed now. While testing the cat and dog were walking around and didn't set them off. I asked the installer again about them and he says they are all different and they have "intelligence" behind them above the simple triggering.

To help, he says if we find a lot of false alarms because of the cat then he can set it so that the system needs two triggers in quick succession which would happen with a person but not a pet.

I'll update once I've had a chance to get used to it all!

So far the system seems to be working with the pets. I've been in and out for errands and bonfire displays. Big test tonight!

Thought I would report back now we've been using the system for a bit. So far so good! No accidental triggers at night even with the cat sleeping in a room with a PIR.
