I live in an old terrace house and cant seem to find an internal stopcock the plumber turned the water off at the street but then stated it may turn off more than just my house, ive looked all over and cant think where it would be? Has anyone else been in this situation if i dont have an internal one can one be fitted? Thank you all for your help in advance

Ok one of mine was in the under stairs cupboard.
Another in with the boiler in airing cupboard and current one is in kitchen cupboard that has the sink, but it could have been moved to the next cupboard along if that makes sense?

Under sink, bath. Follow the water pipes

Grumpyunleashed · 01/11/2019 19:32

Wherever it is it should be close to ground level.
Mine is in the attached garage,

Probably where the kitchen sink used to be when the house was built.

wowfudge · 01/11/2019 22:53

If there are cellars it may be there or even in the cellar of one of the neighbouring houses.

You can certainly have one added. It will help a lot if you have an external stopcock that can be closed before cutting the pipe.

If you have lead water pipes, ask your water co to test your drinking water for lead content before starting work. Send the request today because there may be a delay.

They may be a lead replacement scheme.

In an outbuilding, under the stairs, under the kitchen sink, downstairs loo.
Sometimes there isn't one indoors, but one outside between the external stop tap and the house. We had a n excouncil house that had been built in the years immediately after the second world war that didn't have one inside.

ours was hidden in in the cavity wall under the kitchen sink... we had to cut the plasterboard to find it. doesnt turn though which is an issue....

Mine is under the floor in my living room. I only found it because I was pulling up the carpet before moving in and I noticed the square cut-out in the floorboards.

Some older properties don't have internal stop taps , especially if they've never been replumbed since the house was built. Water companies don't apply the regulations retrospectively. (I used to work for water company).

In our edwardian two up two down terrace it was in the (downstairs) bathroom, in the corner behind the toilet (so on the outside wall).

My mother's house was a 1930s terrace, the only stopcock was set into the path to the front door, just inside the boundary. I don't think there was another one inside the house that shut off everything.
