Grey windows

We are just about to embark on a big renovation and amongst a million decisions decided on grey window frames. Now, I’m not sure. I see them around and they look good, but I worry they are going to look dated in 10 years. We will never be moving again and will need to live with them.

What are people views on them? Help me decide. Grey or stay with white.

We've had grey aluminium windows installed and we love them. Personally wouldn't have the up choice ones as they look bulky but would highly recommend the aluminium ones as the frames are so much narrower.

FamilyOfAliens · 28/10/2019 21:45

I thought grey anything was passé a couple years ago at least?

Freaking0ut · 28/10/2019 21:47

Grey windows are all the rage where I live. Every other house has them. I quite like them but I do think they are the dark brown windows of the future. We are due to be embarking on a big renovation shortly and will be sticking with white windows (I think). I feel similarly about the current navy trend and also coloured exterior cladding. But it’s such a personal choice so you should do what you like OP! The other thing that puts me off having them is the worry that I’ll pull into the drive one day and realise I’ve gone off the colour (as I am prone to doing!).

Family well exactly, but windows tend to hang around a lot longer than the average sofa.

Go white.
The fact you are posting this means you think they are going to date.
You will never be 100% on them.

worriedandannoyed · 28/10/2019 21:51

The grey windows we were quoted for were just white frames with a grey film stuck to them. I did wonder what they'd look like in 10/15 years time if the film starts to peel so we went with white

Yeahyeahyeahyeeeeah · 28/10/2019 21:57

I think the aluminium ones are even more modern looking, which I like, but perhaps that’s the issue, our house was built in 1930

There are a few houses round here with them and they look dated already. Stick with white.

bluebury · 28/10/2019 22:06

Depends on the style of house and style of windows.

In my opinion with a 1930s house, very dark grey thin framed crittall style windows might not date. Lighter grey bog standard windows will.

We just replaced the old wooden windows on our 1930s house with white aluminium. We did think about grey but decided it wasn't in keeping with the original style of the house and once the grey fad had passed we'd look at them and ask ourselves what we were thinking.

TiddleTaddleTat · 28/10/2019 22:59

I think grey might date but would prefer dark grey over the bog standard thick white upvc that everyone seems to go for

userxx · 28/10/2019 23:13

I think they look dark and dingy and knowing my luck a bird would shit on them leaving a massive white mess.

I don't like them on traditional houses. I also think they'll date very quickly. It seems to be the trend around here to render and paint your house all white with dark windows. In 30 years time I imagine new buyers shaking their heads at the dated look!

WalkAwaySugarbear · 29/10/2019 07:07

Yes they'll date but they do look smart. We'll be sticking with white for the foreseeable.

Mosaic123 · 29/10/2019 07:44

Everything dates, but it's hard to see that at the time. White is safer.

Examssuck · 30/10/2019 14:54

We went with grey and I’m really happy with them but I know in 5 (or less) years time I might be kicking myself. Not worrying about it too much. My neighbours have brown ones and although I’d never have them they still look ok and suit the house so hopefully that’s what will happen with ours too.

TiddleTaddleTat · 30/10/2019 15:44

Ours are dark brown (varnished hardwood) and we are struggling to decide what would be better than dark grey.
The decorator has said that it will be too much work to paint them white Hmm
We've painted them white on the inside and it really wasn't that hard once they'd been primed

saraclara · 30/10/2019 15:48

I hate anything other than white for window frames. Brown ones are a deal breaker and I suspect grey ones would be too, if I was buying a house.

If you intend to sell at any point, I definitely wouldn't do it.

MayFayner · 30/10/2019 19:12

@TiddleTaddleTat get a quote from another painter- honestly, don’t let somebody dissuade you from having what you want just because they can’t be bothered.
