Moving on Friday. Having a massive stress about packing service

I need some reassurance. Packers are round tomorrow to pack up our house, ready for moving day on Friday.
I've never used one, but I've seen some posts saying they are amazing. Our move date was fairy short notice and I don't feel we are ready. The place is a mess!

It'll be amazing! They literally pack everything! And so much better than I would have done.

We packed an overnight bag and kept some kitchen bits to one side as our packers also started loading the van the day before we moved. Just let them know what you definitely need left for tomorrow night.

Set aside a bag of stuff you need with you (toiletries, meds, clothes, paperwork), box of stuff like kettle, mugs, tea/coffee, and put them out of the way somewhere they don't get packed - like your car? The Packers will go in like a whirlwind and a bit of mess will make no difference to them. It's so fantastic to just hand over to the professionals, worth every penny!

They are brilliant and prefer you to have done as little as possible. Our bought cardboard boxes with a hanging rail in and just took the clothes straight out of the wardrobe. The one thing I did pack up was my vintage doll house and they made me sign a disclaimer to say that if it was damaged I had packed it myself.
We hadn’t looked at the back of one kitchen cupboard so I was a bit surprised when I was unpacking to find 20 glass dishes - the little ones that Gu desserts come in! DH had slung them in there every time and we had amassed quite a collection.
Good luck with your move. We moved four days after returning from holiday - it was chaos but we got there.

They arrived about 8.30am, had a cup of tea and packed our entire house by 10.30am. Two of them.

Hide anything you don't want them to see or pack - and they will pack everything.

Label everything you can - our packers wrote on the boxes but it was somewhat vague - "books" covered recipe books to children's books to anything you might be able to read. My system was much better and got each box in the right room at the other end.

They will pack literally everything. Including bin complete with rubbish inside if you’re not careful!

helpfulperson · 23/10/2019 19:22

Just be careful and not sit still too long or leave the children unsupervised or they are likely to get packed as well. These guys are machines

margotsdevil · 23/10/2019 19:38

We used the bath as our "don't pack this" area. Worked a treat. The first thing our guys told me when they arrived was their tea/coffee order and said that was my task for the day 🤣

If I ever move again not happening if I can help it I will have packets for the whole house - not just the kitchen/fragiles.

Sounds amazing. Thank you all. I’ll make sure I get some milk and sugar in beforehand!

Packers packed my mother’s kitchen bin before she could empty it.
We found it three days later, a bit smelly.

Fabatfortysomething · 24/10/2019 08:50

Make sure you've got your shoes and not slippers on!! Voice of bitter experience.

Since then I use the car for storing the font pack pile.

AlunWynsKnee · 24/10/2019 08:52

Get them some biscuits too. Definitely agree a safe area because they will pack everything except keys.

gothicsprout · 24/10/2019 08:58

I am still searching for the bag of potatoes and onions my packers packed a week ago... that said, they were fab. We have 2 small children and had done practically nothing. They whizzed in, sorted everything and now we’re gradually unpacking in the new place. Would totally do it again. Hope it all goes well!

Having gone through this 3 weeks ago, here's my advice:

Pack enough stuff for you and your family for 3 days - clothes (remember any clubs etc children need to get to), shoes/trainers, coats, toiletries, and keep this in the car so it doesn't get swept up in their packing.

Keep out some cleaning stuff so you can clean rooms when they're done.

Keep enough mugs/kettle/tea/sugar etc out (they'll make sure you do this!).

Keep them happy - keep supplying biscuits, doughnuts, sandwiches (ours worked through lunch and dinner), fizzy drinks etc.

Ours underestimated how long it would take, so on completion day, they didn't even start loading onto the lorry until about 3pm. We were eventually out by 7, and by the end, stuff was just getting shovelled into boxes, neighbours were helping etc. The new owners were seriously NOT happy (although thankfully not trying to move in the same day). And then we couldn't get unpacked that night, they had to come back the next day, and for a while I wasn't sure we'd be able to sleep in the new house, I was ready to decamp to a hotel.

We thought the fridge was ready to be loaded, so emptied the (small thankfully) contents into a cool bag. In the end, we didn't get a fridge back for about 30 hours, so try to make sure you've got NOTHING in the fridge - we had to throw the lot out. And don't let your DH go out and buy everyone microwave meals on the the night of moving in when there's no prospect of seeing your microwave for another 24 hours - more food that went in the bin.

But overall, it's a great service, and at the end of the day, you'll be in your new home, so it's all good! Good luck and congratulations!
