Is there anyone that DOESNT want a kitchen/diner/open plan?

Ive posted recently about loft conversions as this is next on our list - so my youngest daughter can have a larger bedroom. However, I was speaking to my brother and his wife and they suggested we concentrate on (opening up the downstairs) first - they totally assumed that we would want to knock down the chimney, several walls, extend and have a massive kitchen/diner/family room type thing. Don't get me wrong, I think these are nice but I LOVE the downstairs in my 1930s semi. I like having separate rooms - I dont want kitchen smells in my lounge and I like the kids to have their own space, I also want to keep some of the character of the house. They were genuinely surprised as they thought everyone wants open plan nowadays - am I really the odd one out?

I hate open plan! I would like a kitchen/diner but only because I love a large kitchen. I like to have cosy evening space!

KronksSpinachPuffs · 23/10/2019 18:15

We have a kitchen diner with a separate living room and tbh they're not separate enough!! You have to walk through the living room to get to the kitchen and it constantly smells like cooking which I hate!

JoJoSM2 · 23/10/2019 18:16

I used to be a fan of separate dining and sitting rooms. Now I've got a toddler, I want open plan. I think OAP tend to prefer separate kitchens too.

palacegirl77 · 23/10/2019 18:18

Lol OAPs - I feel like one now

We have a kitchen/diner and a separate lounge, which is exactly how I like it. The children can sit at the table and draw while I cook dinner, but we still have a separate space for relaxing in at other times.

Brooksey5 · 23/10/2019 18:20

I like a cosy evening space too but it depends how you use your home 🙂

FYI a big kitchen diner extension/remodel will probably cost double a loft conversion!

NerdyBird · 23/10/2019 18:21

I'm fine with a kitchen-diner, but prefer separate living room. Have ended up fairly open plan though due to layout of house. Kitchen is slightly separate but no doors betwen the rooms.

Danglingmod · 23/10/2019 18:23

Isn't the optimum arrangement a kitchen-diner plus separate dining room plus separate sitting room?

No thanks to totally open plan.

1066vegan · 23/10/2019 18:24

I'm with you OP. I've got a separate lounge, dining room and kitchen and wouldn't want it any other way.

Aquamarine1029 · 23/10/2019 18:25

An open kitchen/dining is ok-ish, but I absolutely HATE open kitchen/dining/living room. Smells go everywhere, noise is uncontrollable, hate it.

katseyes7 · 23/10/2019 18:26

Me. Besides anything else, l live on my own so l only need to heat the room l'm in.
l lived in an open plan apartment a few years ago and the space was nice, but it took some heating, it was so big and had so many windows.

HeronLanyon · 23/10/2019 18:26

Definitely want separate sitting room always. Good if kitchen is big enough for table and small sofa. That will do me.
Also loathe en suites and conservatories (unless old and original and big). Oh and islands in kitchens.
I always watch property programmes feeling at odds with lots of people.

AfterSomeAdvice1234 · 23/10/2019 18:27

We have open plan living dining room (with double doors in between) and a separate kitchen and it's great!

palacegirl77 · 23/10/2019 18:28

Yep Id like the idea of a table in the kitchen for informal meals/cuppas - I only have a small breakfast bar - but happy to keep it separate, Its like right now, my littlest is on the settee with me, my eldest is in the dining room having her own space (away from littlest) and hubster is in the kitchen (with the dog) - bliss :-)

Hate open-plan! In saying that, we do have a large kitchen diner that has room for a sofa as well. But we have a separate sitting room, dining room (currently repurposed as an office/library) and study (repurposed as a playroom). I’d never buy a house with the living/cooking/dining areas all open-plan.

palacegirl77 · 23/10/2019 18:30

Heron - you loathe islands in kitchens? Im not bothered about them and never thought Id find anyone else that wasnt bothered! When I watch property shows its always number one on the list!

Me! I've got a separate living room and an open plan kitchen diner family area and I'm sick of it! Kids toys are in the family area so they're always swanning about and getting in the way while I try to cook, 2 year old is forever pulling dining chairs over to worktops to climb up and 'make a cup of tea', I step back from the cooker and trip on a bike, the 4 year old suddenly appears sitting on the breakfast bar playing with his a million octonauts.

We will be moving soon and I'm looking for a house with living room, separate dining room that I can use as a playroom/day room and a kitchen with room for a table and no more!

Nonnymum · 23/10/2019 18:37

I really dislike open plan. I currently have a lounger diner and want to move so we can have 2 seperate rooms downstairs because I think it would be more flexible. Open plan means eveyone is on top of each other downstairs and you can't close the door on a messy kitchen/cooking smells.

ItsGoingTibiaK · 23/10/2019 18:46

I’d hate open plan in our house. I like to cook then move away from the heat, smells and mess into a completely separate room to eat. Then leave that mess behind and move to a living room to relax!

BrendasUmbrella · 23/10/2019 18:52

My DS thinks I should knock down the wall between kitchen and dining room to "open up the space" but why would I want to stare at the washing up while I eat?

owlofathena · 23/10/2019 18:52

We have 1930s house and I love having a separate living room and dining room. We have extended to the rear to have a kitchen/diner/family room with a utility room but have kept the original living room and dining room separate as I like having the options of how to use the house. The open plan back is perfect for toddlers but I know when the kids grow up I will be happy to be able to shut myself away in the living room.

Disfordarkchocolate · 23/10/2019 18:54

I hate open plan and I felt the same when I had small children. I'd only buy an open plan if I could put a wall or two up. I hate the noise and the smell and the fact you can't get away from anyone.

larry55 · 23/10/2019 18:57

When we moved to this house we had a kitchen diner and a sitting room with a large cupboard between the sitting room and the dining area. The dining area and part of the kitchen were an extension and the cupboard had been part of the living dining room originally.

We have now got a large wide galley kitchen with a breakfast bar, a separate dining room with glass dividing doors to the sitting room. Ideal for us so we can put dgs toys in the dining room and shut the door when he goes home so we have a tidy room to sit in.

HisBetterHalf · 23/10/2019 19:08

all those stale smelly cooking odours wafting round- no thanks

Skap · 23/10/2019 19:09

With separate rooms you can choose their purpose. I have a large kitchen with dining area, which over the years has been furnished with sofa/ living area, an island (hated that). The dining room has been used as a dining room, housed a table tennis/ pool table and is currently adult DS sitting room. You couldn't do that if it was open plan.
