Kitchen design in awkward room

My kitchen is a very odd shape (or will be once we have removed a wall between the current 'kitchen' and the utility 'room' - which is actually just a corridor running between the back door and garage door).I'll attach a sketch. We need a new kitchen but it is my first house and I have zero imagination!

There are three doors so U-shaped is out, parallel doesn't make best use of the space and there would hardly be any worktop after a sink, cooker, and fridge was installed.

Has anyone seem a similar shaped room made into a very lovely kitchen?

TIA!

That is aterrible diagram....

can you make it the right way round, clearer and some idea of dimensions?

00100001 · 23/10/2019 15:02

and also can you mark where water/gas/electric is at present?

Why dont you get a kitchen planner at B and Q, IKEA or similar have a look for you. They will have the experience of knowing what will work best.
Is it worth getting an architect in to see if you are making the best use of the kitchen, utility space. I thought it was a crazy idea when we had a small space that I was looking at extending and they came up with a great idea which was way better than mine and works teally well.

There's a phone app called magiplan which is free and really easy to help you plan kitchens using your room size spec and dimensions

I see you have a wall that is too narrow for standard kitchen units. A friend had a similar space and used Ikea Billy bookcases with doors to store crockery. From memory, at least some of the doors were made of glass. I was a little dubious beforehand but the end result looked really good.

If the room is 5 metres in either direction you have loads of space.
If it's 3 metres, it's more limiting.

Move some doors. It's not as expensive as you think it is and will make much better use of the space. I'd move the garage one along or into another space entirely, tbh.

Wanderer1 · 23/10/2019 20:01

Thank you so much everyone. I'm definitely going to get a design done, and a quote on moving the garage door. The Billy Bookcase idea is amazing! Definitely going to think about that one, it would be pretty much the perfect depth for the space!

Agree with other poster about moving doors. Your current layout does restrict you and for a bit of extra outlay you could have a much more flexible space

TakeAChanseyOnMe · 23/10/2019 21:38

If you could move the garage door then you could have a small L shape and a big island in the middle.

Soontobe60 · 23/10/2019 21:45

I'd move the garage door as far down as you can and instead of it being a hinged door, have a sliding pocket door so that you can have cupboards right up to the door opening.
Dimensions of the room would help to add to the suggestions.

Canyousewcushions · 24/10/2019 04:22

I'd consider putting as much as possible on a island in the middle and then using the outside of the room as the open floor area. Depending on the dimensions of the room may be do one wall with a row of floor/wall units.

HotGingerPudding2 · 24/10/2019 04:39

DIYKitchens do 300mm deep base units in all their ranges which may suit that wall.

MyOtherProfile · 24/10/2019 04:43

I would make the garden door a window and the current window French doors. That would free up lots of space.

wowfudge · 24/10/2019 06:59

A sliding pocket door might not be suitable between the garage and the house as I think it needs to be a fire door, plus you want it to be secure as someone breaking into your garage would not be seen breaking into the house.
