New front door - where do I start?

I need a new front door. I've recently moved house and the current front door needs replacing.

Where do I start?

Sorry if this seems incredibly stupid - I've never bought a front door before and I'm not sure what to do. I presume I'd have to get someone to fit it, as the current door and surround are wood, and that's not necessarily what I would choose in a new door.

Thanks!

You could try asking round your neighbours if they are friendly.

@SpookilyBadOooooooh I sold the house in the last 12 months and it didn't even come up as a question! If it's not half glass and if it's not going directly into your home you have the potential to save yourself a lot of money. It really sure an option worth considering.

We've just had a Solidor fitted, used a local company, have a look on their website.

They are solid and have a really advanced locking system, not cheap but it looks lovely and is so secure.

I was you 2 months ago! I put off buying a new door because... well... how does one buy a door?! And I was so worried about being ripped off.
I ended up contacting a local company (Apex Windows in Luton, if that's anywhere near you) who advertised all prices in black and white on thier website. They sent out an agent the next day who just sat and chatted to us with a cuppa and talked us though the process. No bullshit, no sales, no pressure. He even talked us out of paying more for a different colour, ha!
We paid £795 for a standard UPVC door with chrome fittings and a spy hole and our choice of glass. It was fitted 5 weeks later and looks great.

We would have picked a fancier, more colourful door in composite rather than UPVC but our estate is subject to regeneration so it's not worth putting too much money into fittings that may be removed in a year or two.

Hmm

Just don’t do what the last home owner did in ours and not only have an awful lock fitted - when you shut the door it doesn’t lock unless a key is put in so anyone can walk in - but it is tiny - only 65cm. I didnt think you could get a door so small!

Google Rock doors, I had mine done last year as my door was old and knackered. Rock door are supposed to be one of the safest out there. I live it an old cold house but I'm really felt a difference downstairs.

I used Solidor.

I went on solidor websites and you can design your own doors, with their differing colours and glass inserts. I went on a couple of websites, we do doors and timbercomposite doors just to get some inspiration. That’s if you want a composite door, we have three of them and they are better than our wooden ones we had before.
