Painting a dark purple wall white

I want to paint out a wall in dd2's old bedroom to make it an inviting guest room /room for her to come back to (she's nearly 24 ).

What's the best product? "Feature" wall is currently purple (from when she was in Y10 or so) and I want it white. All recommendations very welcome!

I think you may need to put on a layer of undercoat first.

Cheap white paint for 2-3 coats then a better quality paint for 2 normal coats on top all round the room.

This is what we did for 2 bedrooms in our current home as one had a dark brown wall and one dark red.

Have a look at the Zinsser range. 123 might do it, but cover stain will definitely cover it up. Screwfix is usually the cheapest place to buy it.

We purchased our bungalow 2 years ago with some truly foul feature walls that needed eradicating.
We found that ‘Trade’ paint is the way to go. Whilst it costs a bit more it has more colour pigment molecules (or some such thing) and so it requires less coats to eradicate strong colours.
We also found that it’s not the make, it’s the magic word on the can, ie ‘Trade’.
You can also get emulsions, silks, gloss etc in it.

Thanks all - my half term task awaits tomorrow. Will let you know how it goes!

After cleaning, patching and smoothing it, give it a couple of coats of light grey Matt emulsion. This will kill the previous colour and prevent it showing through your new white paint.

You would need many coats of white to obliterate a strong colour.

I painted over Fired Earth's Dragon Blood Red and in hindsight I should have used an undercoat first. It took 10 coats of Dulux Brilliant White MÃ¥tte to cover it and it still grins through a bit. I gave up at the tenth coat Grin

So, undercoat and a better paint to what I used.

I've found that "Once" paints - even on white, are patchy.

Alternatively you could cover the whole thing with lining paper and paint that?

wasgoingmadinthecountry · 22/10/2019 21:30

Thanks- think I'll go for high opacity as I'm not the best at papering!! I may opt for a pale grey - then I can be lazy and not move the huge wardrobe to re-paint all the other walls white.

Pale grey is your best bet, regardless of whether or not you eventually go white. Two coats absolutely killed a bright red room for us.
