Anyone getting a new kitchen fitted at the moment?

I feel like I need a support thread! This is waaaay more stressful than expected. We were told to expect a week: units out Monday, floor down Tuesday, radiator moved Wednesday morning and electrics done that afternoon, units in Thursday and Friday. The radiator took all of Wednesday and Thursday. The joiner quit as the units were being delivered on Thursday. New one couldn’t start until Friday. One week in and all we have is a floor, a radiator and some wires hanging out of walls.
We’ve stupidly packed away everything except cups and kettle, and are living off prepackaged food and takeaway. I’m craving vegetables! There’s stuff stored in all but one room, which is ridiculously cramped, especially because dh is reeeaaaalllly stressed by all of it!
Can anyone see a light at the end of the tunnel?

Is anyone any closer? Ours seems to have slowed down so much. Hoping to be tiled by the end of the week. Just need worktops sealing then.

We've got beautiful flooring done. New cooker delivered last week and hopefully electrician is popping around to connect it up today. Cabinets being delivered on Friday and fitter starting on Monday. By this time next week we should have something resembling a kitchen. We've used this fitter and company before so we are relatively confident that it will be quickish and good.

Just need the sink and taps to turn up on time....

MiniCooperLover · 05/11/2019 11:01

Our builder has had to stop now because the flooring were scheduled to start Monday and he still needs another 4 days or so. You can see the bones of the kitchen (as it were) as everything is in place but its not connected up yet so I have a washing machine/dryer (out in the utility) and a microwave, kettle and toaster. Luckily none of us don't eat bread and we've done a few takeaways but its OK so far. I can see how good its going to look when finished and I know that should be next week so I can keep going ....

@Howmanysleepsnow I’m sorry yours appears to have slowed down, imI guess it always feels that way because the cabinets are so bulky and go in so quickly - then the finishing bits take so much longer! Hang in there ☕️

@MiniCooperLover yours is looking fabulous!!! Hope everyone turns up & keeps the momentum up!

@Raaraaboonah - what flooring did you choose? Any chance of a photo?

I was wanting wood, settled for Engineered wood, then an anticipated/karndean type thung now fitters all heavily suggesting click together vinyl (partly I suspect do they can lay it, but others have also said it’s the way forward) and I don’t know what to do? I wanted ‘real’ wood and I don’t want something that feels plasticky but I’m liking the idea I can use my steam mop on the clicky stuff. ?!

SpookilyBadOooooooh · 05/11/2019 11:25

@MiniCooperLover. Can I ask where you got your cabinets from & what style & colour they are. They’re lovely (even with the wrappers still protecting them!)

MiniCooperLover · 05/11/2019 11:25

@SpookilyBadOooooooh we are getting Karndean fitted (today in fact) and I've been warned that steam mop is a no go due to the glue being fitted. I'm a bit gutted about that as they're so handy and feel more hygienic than a normal mop but back to a normal mop I shall go, ha.

MiniCooperLover · 05/11/2019 11:26

@SpookilyBadOooooooh ours are Benchmarx and they're called Midnight Blue. They were originally called Charcoal and I managed to persuade DH on that basis as he was against dark blue/navy but then we saw them in person and he said 'oh they're blue, I like them', ha. Then Benchmarx changed the name so clearly we aren't the only ones who think they're blue ... I think the style is called Sherwood.

SpookilyBadOooooooh · 05/11/2019 12:45

@MiniCooperLover. Re the Karndean & steam mops, it was one of the downsides - & one of the upsides to the click stuff (no glue to dissolve) I guess both are vinyl, the Karndean just seems more ‘quality’ in my head than clicks vinyl ‍🤷🏻‍♀️. I would prefer actual wood as I’m really not a fan of ‘fake’ stuff, but unless it’s there originally - pretty much all flooring seems to be engineered/fake. I need a much older house...and also a lottery win!🤣

The Benchmarx ones look much nicer in your kitchen! When I went in to B, they really didn’t sell themselves to me, mainly due (I think) to how badly they fit their showroom kitchens. Maybe I should have another look with an open mind 🤯

I've got polyflor camaro (I think it's called) in the hall (8 years) and am having the same in the kitchen/utility/conservatory - hopefully next week.
It's glued down LVT like Kardean & Amitico.
I've used a steam mop on it for the last 15 months and it's been fine. Intend to use it on the rest when it's fitted.

My kitchen is mostly there, problems fitting the integrated fridge (reusing existing one) but that's basically sorted - just needs a bit of joinery when the fitter comes back after the flooring done. Plus plinths, levelling and a few bits and pieces. The cooker isn't going in until the flooring is done so that's in the garage and the old one (60cm) is sitting in the space (90cm). But dishwasher & washing machine all sorted, both sinks connected etc.

ClaudiaNaughton · 05/11/2019 18:29

Do you put flooring down first and units on top or units then floor to their edge?

Chasingsquirrels · 05/11/2019 18:46

Generally units first, then floor up to the feet and plinths on top.

Thecatisboss · 05/11/2019 19:11

We had units put in first and then floor. We've just had amtico put down and then the kickboards were put in today! Just skirtings and doors and then the inside of the house will be finished (no bets taken as to when the builder and his joiner will be back to finish off)

Replacement doors coming and kitchen will be finished next weds ... think the dust that's everywhere in the rest of the house will still be here this time next year Grin

Haven't used the oven yet but have used the hob, sink running, quooker fab, dishwasher v v quiet and freezer will soon be full - only need extractor connected now

Raaraaboonah · 08/11/2019 10:45

We've got a cooker installed and units delivered today - fitter coming on Monday. allegedly they will have all the units done by Wednesday and then just need to template the worktop.

as we had the whole floor pulled up and relaid, we've tiled to the wall so they will be under the units. seemed like a good idea at the time.

jokerreturns · 08/11/2019 14:25

We've tiled to the wall too ... turned out old kitchen hadn't been and had 2 sets of old tiles on top of each other so a bit more expensive but better to take it all up and redo completely (and it seems like they used strongest ever bonding for tiles in the 80's, it was some sweat inducing work !!)

Howmanysleepsnow · 09/11/2019 00:06

Nearly there! Just tiling (walls) and decorating to go. We’d planned to decorate before fitting, but were let down so I’m going to have to paint around the units. Wish me luck!
