i am thinking of moving to edinburgh and just wondered bits are nice to live. i guess it would be nice to be fairly central... maybe a couple of miles from the centre. i've read edinburgh is a pretty safe place to live... but other mumsnetters may have more knowledge and i'm not megarich so maybe could not afford the most pricey parts of the city... just a bit clueless at the mo... thx

Gorgie or leith most likely places.

Marchmont lovely but expensive. You are unlikely to find anything in budget.

Leith, Easter Road, Gorgie, Portobello, Tollcross/Lothian Road/High Riggs, Clermiston, Meadowbank, South Side will all have flats or studios in your budget, are all ok areas with plenty amenities and most are in walking distance to the city centre or have frequent bus routes.

If it's area you are most concerned with, I'd avoid the lower area of Leith I.e salamander street, Granton, Pilton and Liberton but that's just me.

Portibello is lovely and has a good bus service to the city. As a pp has said though, for your budget, you would be looking at a flat in that price range.

I think no matter who u ask everyone will have different opinions on areas from personal experience. I personally would pick leith over Georgie the top of leith is abit nicer but again isn't to cheap. Easter road and abbey hill aren't to far from town and maybe more within budget. Also not sure if u said if you drive or not as a lot of places will be permit parking which is another cost to maybe take into consideration x

Bennington is on a bus route into town but there isn't much to do around there. It's quite dreary in fact.

Pilots and Granton have improved a lot in recent years. With a budget of £130k I think they, and Gorgie, Oxgangs, places like that, would be your best bet. Marchmont, Newington and much of Leith would be way out of budget (lots of student lets and STLs there), Portobello too.

'Pilton'.
