Just curious. I think all the house on the street were built with them, but have no idea what it's for. The seems to be a hole through as though you thread something through. It's to low for a washing line, and doesn't seem strong enough to attach a bike lock to, so I'm out of ideas.

When was the house built ?

ForeverBubblegum · 16/10/2019 17:16

Not sure, it's ex council, so the deeds only date back to the 80's (possibly when right to buy came in) The house is older then that, maybe 40/50's. There were also bakerlight door handles when we bought it, if that helps age it.

Also, sorry I seem to have posted 5 of this thread. Don't know how that happened.

Maybe a bracket/holder for an old gas/water pipe? It looks like it fixed something long and cylindrical to the outer wall?

wowfudge · 16/10/2019 20:08

Whereabouts in the country are you? Wondering if there might be a local explanation.

ForeverBubblegum · 16/10/2019 20:31

I'm in the north east

Do you live in a mining area? My first thought was something to do with miners tools/ storage or something along those lines
Are there letters on the top? If you can find out what they are can you not trace the emblem? I imagine it’s a mark from the blacksmith

ForeverBubblegum · 16/10/2019 21:13

The was mining, so that's a possibility. It's not metal, it's like a strong pot type stuff, the kind of thing I imagine chimney pots are mad of, with a glaze.

on the side of the house?

is there a fireplace on the other side?

ForeverBubblegum · 17/10/2019 08:16

No fireplace, it's round the back of the house with the kitchen on the other side of the wall. Could be linked to utilities?

Can you see anything on Google Earth or the satellite view on Maps/Streetview showing anything connected to the glazed brick. I wonder if it's a pipe support.

wowfudge · 17/10/2019 11:37

Could be a vent from a range or boiler perhaps or something to do with a copper (used for washing laundry in the olden days).

Wingedharpy · 18/10/2019 01:26

Is it for tethering your horse/pit pony/whippet/wife/husband?

BitOfFun · 18/10/2019 01:32

An air brick is my best guess. Is it solid, or hollow?

MaybeitsMaybelline · 18/10/2019 05:09

How fascinating, I have just read about the “knocky up” boards outside miners homes in Ferryhill. It love the idea its related to employment of the inhabitants.

TheVoiceInTheShed · 18/10/2019 05:41

Looks like a wall tie to me

TheVoiceInTheShed · 18/10/2019 05:42

Posted too soon- wall ties hold the brickwork together/strengthen it, metal is 'threaded' through to hold it together

TheVoiceInTheShed · 18/10/2019 05:43

Sorry just saw it's not metal Blush

MyOtherProfile · 18/10/2019 05:47

Can you ask the neighbours? Or post on a local Facebook page?
