Best flooring for pets

Hi Guys,

So I'm buying my first house and it's very exciting. They've asked me to choose the floor but I want to make sure I choose the right floor for my dog.

So I saw this on The Makeover Centre but wondered if laminate is too slippy and carpet will hold hairs. Any help is gratefully appreciated.

Non slip tiles (ceramic) and some inexpensive rugs might be a good option. I'mnot a pet owner though.

Karndean or similar. Not as slippy or plastic looking as laminate. Can be mopped & disinfected unlike wood & carpet. Warmer & softer under foot than tiles.

Choosing the right floor for your dog, is that
a) easiest to clean,
b) most comfortable for your pooch?

Mine like a choice of a hard cool floor (so ceramic tiles) or soft so they can make a 'nest' - once cleared of imaginary snakes! so I have ceramic tiles with old towels at strategic points. As well as a zillion dog beds.

But IME, unless you're prepared to hoover 3 times a day (I know someone who does) no floor is immune to dog dirt.

We have got sheet vinyl downstairs. Most of it is wood effect and a lot of people think it is wood. Its got a 10 year guarantee and is pretty heavy duty. We got that because I was sick of the effect of two dirty dogs paws on carpet, which, despite the best of intentions, seemed to get muddied accidentally quite often. Vinyl is easy to mop, and we have a large selection of rugs (washable or scrubbable) to make things cosy.

We had ceramic tiles where the dog mostly goes. So hall and live in kitchen. He wasn’t allowed in our drawing room but was in the family room and this has a wooden floor with a rug. He didn’t shed hair though! We do, however, live in a house surrounded by fields and woods, so he’s a country dog.

If I was redoing my house (having had dogs on carpet and wood floors) I would go for good quality cushioned vinyl. There are loads of designs these days from wood effect to tile effect so something to suit all tastes. It's not as slippy as wood and really easy to keep clean.
As far as karndean goes, I have it in my kitchen and haven't been too happy with it...it looked great for a couple of years but then lost it's sheen (despite using their cleaning kit)

@yearinyearout that's interesting to here about your experience of karndean. Usually hear that about amtico. We went with karndean after seeing how brilliantly it held up in several family members houses, ranging from 5 to 11 years old! (I'm not a karndean rep)

We have cats & soon to get a dog. Wisest decoration decision we ever made.

I have several large dogs and our whole ground floor is fitted with ceramic wood effect tiles. They are brilliant - non slip and very easy to keep clean.

Karndeen and lamanate are terrible.my boy had a slipped disk in his spine because of laminate and its cold and noisy anyway. We had some heavily textured vynal that gave a bit of grip but not ideal for my 35 kg dog throwing himself at the door when someone's there. I would say the safest it carpet just get cheeper stuff so it's not crazy to change when it smells. If you buy a carpet shampoo machine it helps remove all the little hairs that get stuck in the fibers

I’d agree with Karndean or similar LVT flooring. We opted for a floor by Brampton Chase as it was the best design for us. We have a beagle and his hair is easy to brush up, plus he dribbles loads after drinking (!) and the floor is waterproof. Ideal really and looks lovely as well :)

We have wood downstairs with rugs strategically placed so that the dog can jump onto the settees from them otherwise the floor is too slippy . . We have carpets in the bedrooms but dog is short haired and I have cordless vacs on both floors so it’s easy to keep clean .

@LizzieMacQueen it's mainly to stop him from slip-sliding everywhere because he's a very playful dog who is always running around but it also needs to be easy to clean because we know what dogs are like.

Thanks for all your suggestions guys. This is really helpful. I think I know what to tell the builders now.
