How much oil do you use?

We are moving to a house with oil (?) central heating. The water is heated by it too. There is a brand new Worcester boiler in situ.

Approximately how many litres should we expect to use per month?

2 short showers and a bath per day-shallow. We would only have the heating on in the evening and for an hour in the morning. All out at work/school etc. We don't overheat either.

There is also an open fire so that would be used too- as it's in the woods, the wood is free!

We have a 3 bed house. 2 adults 2 kids. Two short showers a day for the adults and 2-3 baths per week per child. We have a log burner so don't always have the heating on. We use around 1,000 litres per year. Based on last year's prices, it's about £500.

4 bed 4 bath house with high ceilings and use around 2000 litres a year

Lots of showers and baths going on, heating on an hour in the morning, two at night perhaps? Use the log burners a lot in winter too

It's a cold house as it's a barn conversion but yet it is well insulated

@Woollyfoolly if you're thinking of replacing an old boiler then I really would urge you to.look into having an air source heat pump. We switched last year and it's brilliant. No more worrying about oil.prices plus we're getting a subsidy of just over £9k which covers the cost.

OP we were in a similar situation to you, and were using about 1600 litres a year.

Again thank you for all your comments. You really are helping with advice.
@runningintothesunset
Thank you for that. I didn't know- that'll be very useful.

It's also worth finding out if there's a local buying club. Oil companies will usually discount for bulk buys. There's one in our village, everyone orders together and the savings are usually worth it. The organiser emails round once a month and everyone who is running low puts in an order, he then does the haggling with the companies and orders from the cheapest.

WoollyFoolly · 17/10/2019 07:11

@EmmaGrundyForPM that's exactly what we're hoping to switch to! Actually we've been looking into a hybrid boiler because our house is not very well insulated so an air source heat pump may struggle in winter but with a hybrid you can 'top up' with oil if you need to.

14 year tenancy? That's impressive, although it can be done with solicitors etc. And it will protect you if the landlord does what non-corporate landlords do: die, divorce, go bust etc.

also remember the obvious; decent curtains with thick linings (not farty transparent jobs as seen on TV), shut doors, wear a jumper etc. Just like anywhere.

@EmmaGrundyForPM
Thank you. Will have a look for a local one.

@mencken
Sorry that should read that the previous tenants, who were friends, WERE in for 14 years. Bloody autocorrect.
But the agents have said that we should be able to stay as long as we like, as if the landlord was to die, the heirs etc run the estate as a business.

I have real numbers somewhere I can't find... I want to say the annual cost last 15 yrs has been about £600. So however much oil that buys. 4 bed detached house in exposed conditions, but we don't use a lot of water or heat it high. We have excellent insulation.
