My friend suffers from a long term illness and recently her daughter has said she would like her mum to go and live with her so that she can look after her...My friend would like to live with her daughter very much because of feeling so unwell.....
My friend lives in a council owned sheltered 1 bedroom accommodation and her daughter lives in a 2 bedroomed house ....
Is it possible that the Council would let her daughter have a 4 bedroom house to rent because of change of circumstance as her daughter has a son and daughter who need their own room and to give my friend her own room when the Council will be getting back a 2 bedroom house and a 1 bedroom flat.....? Has anyone else been in this situation ? .......Any advice would be much appreciated....

They can go on the waiting list, but in almost every area four bed social housing is in very short supply. Also their eligibility will depend on the age and sex of the children.

They'll need to check the authority's procedure on combining households, in mine you're only counted as one unit once you are living as one.

Your local authority will advise on the rules in your area.

My area isn't too short of council houses in general but there is definitely a huge shortage of 4 bed houses here. There's a few families just in my village that need a 4 bed but haven't got a chance.

She’d be chancing it, 4beds aren’t common in most areas.. and if the kids are still age to share she’d likely be given 3 bedroom long before a 4 comes up.. families here are actually waiting on 4’s being built while still in 2beds.

They probably won't get a 4 bed as they are like hens teeth, but may get a 3 bed parlour house so the front room can be used as a bedroom. That's what's usually suggested in my area.

Their best bet would be a 3 bed parlour style - separate dining room which is then converted to a 4th bedroom. More common than a 4 bed but still in short supply.

The other issue may be is that IME the council also need to ensure that the accomodation is appropriate for the occupants, and if the mother has a long term illness they may also need a property with a downstairs bedroom and bathroom/ level access. Which might mean an even longer wait.
