Gas Vs Induction

Hi Guys, I am currently in a conundrum and looking for some advice or recommendations, as it were, in what I would be best to do. I currently live on my own and I have a rather modern black glass hob with risen 'Beds' surrounded by cast-iron pan supports. It looks great but it truly is a b to clean to say the least with any slight mark making it look mucky. It is difficult also to clean round or under the gas hob burner beds or the dials as any liquid or cleaner will seep under those areas and streak like crazy as you move your cloth over them.

I have been thinking about getting an induction and have no idea where to start. Although I love gas hobs, they are a nightmare to clean, especially the dark glass ones, but then again no gas hob is easy to clean or simple as you have to take it apart to clean and then fit each part back on it's not a simple spray and wipe.

I have looked at some Induction hobs, by Bosch and Neff mainly, and there are two models that come with a 13Amp plug connection, I feel this would limit the use to only 1 or two of the 'burners' rather than being able to use them all or more than two. And for more I would need to see about possibly increasing my kitchens wiring to accomodate it, which could cost a lot of money as well as become an upheaval if the works required kitchen and living room floor to be uplifted etc.

I live in a mid-terraced house, where the front door leads onto the living room via a small entry way at the foot of the stairs. The fuse box is located above the door and my kitchen is through the lounge. I would really hope that the work can be done without any uplofting of carpet etc and done some other way but I fear any of this work will definitely cost more into the hundreds.

If there was a flat glass gas hob, with no raised areas under the burners, I would go for that, but like I said any mess between the dials its a nightmare to remove. I've tried moist wipes, microfibre cloths etc and whatever happens I don't get a nice "Streak Free" shine, even after using just water so what I must be using must be picking up excess grease or oil from splatters.

IF you have moved from Gas to Induction, or are thinking of this move, would you be happy with a 13Amp, or have you got one and what is your experience. OR would you recommend going for a more powerful model if possible.

**Any electricians here please feel free to contact me, I am looking for a good electrician in the Edinburgh area. :D

You are wasting your time with a 13 amp. I have an AEG and it is rated at 31amps as it has a surge facility. Also needs its own dedicated supply. If you are going to get one, do a proper job in it or stick to gas

MrsPellegrinoPetrichor · 13/10/2019 11:16

You need the correct wiring. I love my Bosch induction,I've had it for 11 years and wouldn't have anything else now. Gas seems very slow compared to induction ,the Bosch power surge is amazing and brings water to the boil in seconds. Easy to clean too.

I had the same issue OP when I did a mini refurb a few years ago.
We went for gas again in the end as I didn't want my Minton hall tiles damaged/disturbed.
Electrician advised plug in hob wouldn't really be satisfactory so that left us with no choice.
Do your hob's knobs😁 not pull off so that you can clean around them?
Can't help with a totally flat suggestion, sorry.

Jamesr1501 · 13/10/2019 13:19

Yes my knobs do pull off but that is where the ‘fun’ starts as and liquid or moisture gets under their rubber seal and causes chaos. I’ve taken it out too to clean but takes a while to get it streak free, if at all...

I am looking to get an electrician to come out and give a quote, so for now may be best to cancel order with this new hob. Even though I may only use one burner at a time it’s still best to look at getting a better one I guess. So until I find out I’ll cancel

I wanted an induction hob in a kitchen refurbishment for all your reasons. Then DH had to have a pacemaker; back to gas!

Jamesr1501 · 14/10/2019 18:41

I am looking at three Bosch models and cannot make my mind up. Two include flex induction which while it may be convenient I dunno how good or needed it is for me. Especially the one with ‘Fry Perfect’ ability.

I would appreciate your help.

  1. (The one I may end up going for)

  1. The priciest one...
www.johnlewis.com/bosch-pxe651fc1e-induction-hob-black/p3258822?

Not sure how often I’ll use flex, but the John Lewis rep did say it was a bonus and excellent option as allowed use for pan on any point of the zone, (1-3 pans, fish kettle, roaster etc or allows the likes of. Milk pan to be used on front rather than back). He advised that pans need to cover 50/60% of the zone for them to work, where as on induction it’s 30% if only using one of the zones on the flex area.

Which would you advise is a good option. I’m kinda tempted by the £100 redemption on the middle one. And may end up being between the first two.

I personally hate the way gas hobs look . Way too fussy and spoil the look of the kitchen( misses point )

Mother87 · 14/10/2019 19:00

When I scanned your thread title my brain told me it was about being in labourGrin

XingMing · 14/10/2019 20:03

@Gubbsy, look at the newest gas under glass hobs perhaps?

Jamesr1501 · 14/10/2019 20:26

I’m going with induction. And looking to choose from 1 and two as listed in my latest post.

I have a bosch induction on 13amp and its brilliant. No issues with power and I can have several things on at once etc.
So fast...a pot boils in lightening speed

EloiseLane · 14/10/2019 20:38

I want to love my high power induction hob. It's incredibly easy to clean - way easier than my conventional electric, and I like the controls, but I miss gas if I'm honest.

Our kitchen design depended on moving the hob to near a window, so it had to be electric.

daisyphase · 14/10/2019 22:18

I got a new induction range cooker in 2016. What a faff! Had to upgrade the electrics, had to move the electric switch further away leaving a tiling hole in my kitchen wall. 5 burners, and if more than a couple were on, there wouldn’t be enough power to have them all on high at the same time. Induction meant complexity and my rather expensive Neff induction failed 4 times in 2 years. I was so very very grateful when the retailer allowed me to have a replacement range cooker and be shot of the 5hing. Wentt back to gas, I adore it and will never complain about cleaning again.

BubblesBuddy · 14/10/2019 22:38

Do you not have an oven with the required electrics? Surely your oven isn’t 13 watts? Or is it gas?

BubblesBuddy · 14/10/2019 22:47

I would be inclined to have no 2. Would you use or want the functions on no 3. No 1 has the flexible cooking space so that might be handy. However I don’t have a fish kettle, or a roasting pan for my induction hob and I can have my milk pan on the front or the back. That’s no massive advantage! My hob browns evenly. Just use a decent frying pan!

My hob is wider. I can move pans into the non heat area and not on to the work surface. I quite like that. They are amazing though and worth the money.

Jamesr1501 · 15/10/2019 04:05

@BubblesBuddy I have a neff slide and hide Pyrolitic oven which I love and before ordering my new hob I had an electrician out who confirmed I was good to go. I have a 40Amp fuse for cooktop (as it’s labelled on my fuse board possibly from when built in 2001) and the electrician was very confident that there was no need to require any additional work. He blew a sigh of relief as did I.

I’ve ordered No2, simplicity is my thought in the purchase and the other ones looked a little less so. It arrives tomorrow ready to be installed same day. I should receive my delivery window tonight according to John Lewis!!

I previously had one with a plug and noticed it would slow down when 2/3 zones were on. And it too made a lot of clicking etc. Electrician advised me as did BSH rep in store at John Lewis against them as no good If needing more than 1/2 zones.
