What do to with shit kitchen with no money?

This is our kitchen before we moved in. Those cupboards are all shit vinyl wrap and the vinyl has come off the kickboards now as we had to replace broken integrated washing machine. Was never able to get it to stay back on, so now have bare MDF kickboards.

The tiles and units are that perfect match of impossible to paint the wall a colour that's not horrible. It's all orangey terracotta awfulness.

How can we improve the kitchen with no money? We really like bright bold colours so this kitchen is the anti us. Tile stickers then deep green wall paint? Peeling off the laminate and painting? Any wisdom appreciated!

I would consider adding the colour in with accessories, so kettle, toaster etc. As a pp said the danger is you will simply throw good money after bad and you'd be better off just saving that.

I would go with the blue in your dinning room for the cupboards. Those brass handles looked great and would go with the dark blue. Paint the tiles and or walls white or grey or if you are really brave orange - I am thinking something like Farrow & Ball Charlotte colour or similar.
The flooring I have no suggestions but it might blend in with navy blue.

Thing is with saving to properly do it is that beyond cosmetics, I'd find it hard to justify. Everything aside from some vinyl is in good condition, floor tiles etc. There's nothing wrong with it except me hating how it looks!

I gather that the worst part is the doors and the plinth.

In standard sizes, replacements can be bought from numerous suppliers, anf will usually fit the standard hinge positions on your cabinets.

Cheapest doors are usually vinyl wrap MDF, which I do not recommend. However you can get flat laminated doors (slab doors) clad in hard plastic laminate like worktops, if you can find a pattern you like. They are very durable.

You can also buy painted doors, which are less durable but may suit your style.

Buying from a manufacturer or agent is of course cheaper than from a showroom or fitting company (which also will be buying them from a manufacturer)

A vast variety of knobs and handles is evailable from suppliers like Ironmongerydirect. You may find the same handles at kitchen companies, at very different prices.

@PigletJohn

Any other recommendations for reasonably priced kitchen cabinet handles?
I'd not thought of Ironmongerydirect, despite having ordered stuff from before, and they have a couple I like but aren't quite what I'm looking for. I do like the prices though!

PigletJohn · 14/10/2019 18:28

I only use Ironmongerydirect for that kind of thing, they have a wide range.

I have a bulk hardware supplier of cheap rubbish (as sold on market stalls) that I almost never use.

In my own kitchen I have a Hafele handle, originally from Magnet. I have been able to buy matching extras on fleabay, presumably from people who overstocked, at very low clearance prices. You have to know the exact model, because popular ones are copied, and the copies may not be the same, or as good, for example they might not be stainless so could be plated zinc, or will rust.

Chasingsquirrels · 14/10/2019 18:32

Thanks PigletJohn, I wasn't looking for anything branded or a copy, just a relatively simple bar handle. I did see a couple I quite like on ironmongerydirect, but wondered if there was another similar site. They did have a very wide range though, so I guess anywhere else will be similar.

Don’t peel the cupboards- paint them and change handles. Use tile decals to add colour or paint the walls.
I would also paint the kickboard the same colour as the cupboards.
Fill holes in wall and then replace with shelves or cover with pictures.
I agree a nice vinyl floor would look good.
I have replaced doors and worktops in the past but this can get expensive. You could consider taking the cupboards out and replacing with free standing furniture like a dresser or an island in places but this won’t lend itself to a modern look.

And don’t worry, I have seen much worse!

My kitchen looked almost identical but worse as I had carpet in the kitchen lol but I didn't believe in wasting money tarting it up for a temporary fix when I would replace at some point so I lived with it since 2012 and have just got around to doing it this summer as I was saving for my ideal kitchen and had to save for YEARS to afford it.....

If you Google you can find suppliers of bare MDF doors you can paint yourself. Or get MDF cut to size for slab doors and paint them. Pale grey is good at toning down a terracotta floor. You could tile over the tiles, white brick tiles are pretty cheap. How are you at DIY?

Also B&Q are selling off their discontinued kitchens, there are some bargain doors online
