Joiner - reasonable quote or not?

Would appreciate thoughts on if this is a reasonable quote or not? DH thinks it’s a bit high, I’m not sure as there’s quite a few bits and I imagine the cabinet and boxing in might be a bit fiddly. It’s someone local we’ve used previously and he did do a good job. We’re in Yorkshire and he’s quoting £450 for:

Three large shelves with brackets going in a cupboard (and going around a corner) - about 1m x 50cm
A rounded shelf putting up - about 70cm x 30cm
Building a small boxed cabinet around electric consumer unit
Boxing some pipes in 1m x 0.5m
Boxing in waste pipe of small basin in waterproof MDF

Does that sound about right?

Just of the top of my head as a total guesstimate... from a diy perspective i would break down the costs as follows;

  • Collect materials, set up for job and dispose of waste... 2 to 3 hours labour.
  • Cut and install 3 shelves ... materials inc brackets @ £30, plus 2 to 4 hours labour.
  • Box elec unit ... materials inc door, hinges, handle @ £40, plus 3 to 5 hours labour.
  • Box pipes ... @ £10 materials, plus 1 to 2 hours labour.
  • box wastepipe @ £20 materials, 1 to 2 hours labour.

So roughly £100 materials and between 9 and 16 hrs labour / 2 days (although i would expect a tradesman to do it in less time... but he may still block out 2 days).

So if he charges £150 per day (to cover his van, travel, miscelaneous odds/sods, replacement of tools etc) that is between £250 and £400 for time and materials.

So £450 not out of the ballpark as a quote ... especially since he has seen the job, and i haven't!!

If he is a tradesman you trust, you might save a few pounds getting someone cheaper... but will they be as good?

I would still advise getting a couple of quotes though.

Sounds about right, but joiners do charge a fortune also (rightly so it's quite a complicated skill) I was quoted £3,000 for a modern overbed wardrobe recently to compare.

Sounds like quite a good price - as with anything, you could get a few quotes to make sure but if you've used him before and were happy with his work then, I'd go for it!

Sounds reasonable to me we have just paid £495 to have a new pcp board put in and three double plugs put in one bedroom and in Yorkshire too

isseywithcats · 03/10/2019 15:08

ps one guy qouted 3929 for the same job

isseywithcats · 03/10/2019 15:09

thats £929

shelves are carpentry, not joinery.

Here, you'd struggle to get a quote for a smallish job. My carpenter/joiner is a perfectionist, so if he quoted that price, I'd probably go with it but be persnickety about the finish I wanted. It's quite fine work if you want quality detailing.

Does it include materials? It sounds very reasonable My brother does a lot of carprentry jobs for me, which I provide all materials for, and I give him £100 at day on top, or £200 when I am feeling flush to keep him sweet.

XingMing · 04/10/2019 21:06

My joiner charges £180 per day. Which is about the going rate for a good tradesman.

Excluding materials, in the rural south west.
