Dishwasher help - calling Pigletjohn?

Tortoiser · 03/10/2019 00:02

@pigletjohn
My integrated dishwasher seems to have just died. Makes a few half-hearted attempts to do what it should when I close the door, but it doesn’t get to the tablet release stage.
Any ideas?
Help.
Thanks

Sorry @PigletJohn

what are these attempts?

does it fill up with water?

Does it empty at the end or beginning of a cycle?

Does it have any flashing lights?

What's the make and model?

Tortoiser · 03/10/2019 00:22

Thank you!
The ‘attempts’ are to what I think is to wash. As in it makes the right sounds for a short while, but then stops, before it releases the tablet and any water is produced.
Electrolux. Model - not sure. I’ll check (I’ll have to dig it out, so probably will be in the morning)

do you mean it doesn't take in water?

Tortoiser · 03/10/2019 06:02

Yes. A gurgling sound comes from the sink. But no water is going in now.

Electrolux ESL 63010

The gurgling noise will be the machine trying to pump out any remaining old water before it starts the wash cycle. After it has completed that, it should open the fill valve.

If you look under the filter, is there any water?

Clean or dirty?

Tortoiser · 03/10/2019 09:38

A) I’ll have to check the manual to see where the filter is
B) I’m at work now so I’ll do it later and will report back

Thank you @PigletJohn for your help thus far.

Hi @PigletJohn

There is a bit of water above the filter, obviously therefore and below it.

It wasn’t dirty. But there was some debris in it, but I think that came off the filter - which was a bit manky, because I didn’t realise it needed regular cleaning. (First lesson in dishwasher maintenance learnt right there).

After you cleaned it out, pour a jug of clean water in. Close the door and start the washer. When it stops gurgling look to see if the amount of water has been reduced by the initial pumping-out. It should be able to pump a bucketful out, if you've poured it in.

Also please post a photo of the drain hose where it connects to the drain, in case there is an error or blockage.

Tortoiser · 03/10/2019 22:24

Ok. Pour the water into the filter area?
Another stupid question coming up (sorry in advance!)
Where’s the drain hose?

dementedpixie · 03/10/2019 22:27

Drain hose may connect to a pipe under your sink. Mine is a grey corrugated hose

LegArmpits · 03/10/2019 22:28

We had this problem last year. There was a tiny leak in one of the pipes underneath which made the cycle stop for safety. Built in dishwasher (Lamona, not the best!) so we had to take the plinth off. Located the leak and patched it up with Sugru. Has worked perfectly every day since.

Tortoiser · 03/10/2019 22:33

Ok - thanks all, that’s helpful.
Here’s a pic of where the drain hose might be then....

typical error, it does not go high enough. It should curve up to touch the underside of the worktop or draining board.

As it is lower than the sink, when you pull the plug out, sink water can flow into the waste hose and run down into the dishwasher.

Does the grey drain hose rise up at any other point, for example at the back of the dwr?

OOI, open the dishweasher door, fill up the sink, pull the plug out. Does any water (and tealeaves, peas, bacon fat) appear in the bottom of the dwr?

Tortoiser · 04/10/2019 00:08

I don’t think I can get behind the dishwasher. It’s integrated.

I’ll do the sink test tomorrow.
I still haven’t poured the bucket of water in as I wasn’t sure where to pour it.
By the filter area?

OP posts:
Tortoiser · 04/10/2019 00:09

I’ll see if I can feel the hose though - maybe that would work.....

OP posts:
PigletJohn · 04/10/2019 00:30

It doesn't matter where you pour the water. It will lie on the floor of the dwr and drain towards the filter well. Just don't add enough to come out of the door. It can hold about 5 litres, I suppose.

If you can find the installation instructions they will say how the machine is screwed to the cabinets at each side. You will have to pull off the plinth too (it is usually clipped to the legs of the units)

Happyspud · 04/10/2019 00:34

Do you know what @PigletJohn, I think you should launch your own brand and site and YouTube channel. You’ll make a mint.

MaidenMotherCrone · 04/10/2019 00:52

I second the above. Hope you got your Gin prize @PigletJohn. A worthy winner!

Lyingonthesofainthedark · 04/10/2019 12:58

Third!

Tortoiser · 04/10/2019 19:05

Yes @PigletJohn you are a superstar!
I can’t remove the plinth. It’s a solid one that runs the length of the kitchen. So that’s a bummer.
I don’t think I’m sufficiently equipped to remove the dishwasher. But I can feel that through the hole the drain hose does dip.
