Two woodburners.....thoughts

Moving to a house with a woodburner in the sitting room. There’s a gas fire in the snug/dining room. Thinking of replacing that with another woodburner. Am I going to miss having one fire I can just turn on!?

Yes Smile

We use our woodburner in our sitting room every evening through winter if we're going to be in the room for several hours, but we've only ever used the open fire in the dining room once. It just requires too much attention to maintain and the room gets far too hot.

We have two, I wouldn't change either for one I just turn on.

MsMightyTitanAndHerTroubadours · 02/10/2019 09:51

we have two too!

The one in the other room tends to be lit more if people are here, it's a bigger room, nearer the kitchen, people tend to congregate in that one. Then the sitting room one is lit once we settle down for the evening.

Once you get to know how the stoves work it's pretty easy to work out how long they'll burn for, so although it's not instant on and off you can manipulate the temperatures reasonably well ime.

...except this time of year when you think you are freezing to death and you light it, and then within 15 minutes everyone is in a t shirt wafting themselves. The moral of that story is don't light them until it really is cold. :o

I guess the other thing to consider is whether the chimney is usable for a woodburner.

We don't have any other form of effective heating in our sitting room and it's a large space with a double height ceiling so it gets very cold in winter but the woodburner warms it reasonably quickly.

I rely on the central heating in the kitchen and dining room so that the family can get breakfast and get out of the house without their teeth chattering! I'm not going to start setting fires for the 30 mins of use the space gets in the morning.

If you have other heating sources and the woodburner is just an occasionally used attractive addition then great - go for it. But if you're relying on it as the only heat source then it's not really a practical alternative IMO.

I wouldn't, unless you live in the sticks. They keep assessing whether or not to ban log burning stoves in urban areas to reduce air pollution.

SalamanderOnHoliday · 02/10/2019 12:33

We're in the sticks so should be OK.

In our current house we've got one in the front room that really only gets put on once we've settled in for the night. So there's times when you get in a bit later or aren't staying in and its not worth it that I would like some instant heat, but put a jumper on instead.

In the new house the new one would be in the new kitchen diner where I imagine we will spend quite a bit of time in the weekend or when people are over. So would get used.....

Kitsmummy. You’ve got my fireplace and you’ve got my dog.
