Where to buy a house in Manchester

I'll be moving to Manchester from London in November for work. I will rent initially but will be looking to buy a house next year. Which areas would you recommend I look to buy in?

I'm a first time buyer with a budget of around £250k. I like lively, multicultural city areas but would also like easy access to parks or countryside if possible. I'll be commuting to Salford Central. I don't have children, so school catchments aren't an issue.

I'll visit areas before I buy but would really appreciate any suggestions of areas to consider in the meantime. Thanks!

Stretford might suit you. It is rapidly gentrifying and has a fantastic community spirit. I would look at Victoria Park area, which is really the hub. You would be able to get a 3 bed house for that budget. Not sure about the commute on public transport but by car or cycle it would be fine.

Metrolink from Stretford is probably your best bet. The closest stop is probably St Peter's Square and it's a 5-10 minute walk from there.

Trains from North Manchester go straight into Salford Central (Bolton - look at Lostock / Horwich with good access to countryside too). If you want to social amenities of Manchester, maybe Chorlton / Stretford.

Prestwich/whitefield. Both have decent bars and restaurants, Heaton Park, prestwich Clough on the doorstep, tram into town easy enough.

What about monton or eccles? Both near to Salford.

My friends commute into Salford from Worsley. Very nice area.

Also look at Wigan. Greater Manchester.. Good priced houses and can commute into Salford central easily.

South Swinton (m27 under the east lancs road) is very nice
I love Whalley Range but not sure how good that will be for commuting

Monton and South Swinton (it is only EAs who call it that!) are good areas and I've lived in both. It really depends on your lifestyle and what's important to you OP. That side of Manchester makes more sense for your commute.

Whalley Range is next to Chorlton so great for the social side of things. Not sure there will be a great deal available for the OP's budget in the nicer parts of it - it's rental central round there and not cheap. Tram and bus services are pretty good though.

Thanks everyone. This is so helpful. I'll probably have a look at a few of these areas and weigh up the commute with other factors. I'm really looking forward to being in Manchester- I've heard such good things about it as a city.
