Help dishwasher problems!

Hi All
Need help please
I inherited a Miele dishwasher and washing machine and when I used the dishwasher it used to leave me with a small flood of water and detergent which I thought was due to using too much detergent as often there was soap on the floor too (as in lots of bubbles). I stopped using extra detergent and this doesn’t always happen.

Now my dishwasher has 3 lights flashing (wash/rinse, dry and end) and this always occurs after 5 minutes of starting the dishwasher. It makes the usual noises like it’s filling up with water but then it stopped, flashes and doesn’t completely drain the water back out.

To make matters worse now the washing machine (which is still working) seems to be causing floods on the floor but the water is not directly under the machine.

I looked at the majntenance guide and followed all the instructions like cleaning filters but no luck

Please help if you can!

What does the manual say those flashing buttons mean?

TheAlternativeTentacle · 27/09/2019 20:30

You've got a blockage somewhere along the outlet pipe/s

Thanks for the replies
It says “there may be a technical fault”

Do the washer and the dishwasher both connect to the same waste pipe?
It sounds like the waste pipe is blocked so the water can't get away.
Try cleaning the filters -have you run the dishwasher with a cleaner?

PigletJohn · 27/09/2019 23:59

bubbles on the floor sounds strange. What sort of "detergent" have you been using?

Is your dwr built in or can you pull it out from the wall?

Is water coming from under the door; or under the base; or from the hose?

PigletJohn · 28/09/2019 00:01

if you can photograph the waste hoses, and the drains they attach to, that will give some clues.

AnchorDownDeepBreath · 28/09/2019 00:16

Sounds like a waste pipe issue - I had the same, and my Miele dishwasher & washing machine did exactly the same.

johnd2 · 28/09/2019 09:31

Are the machines next to each other? Floods can move a long way, it could be leaking from one into the other. It's even possible the washing machine is draining back into the dishwasher or the sink is draining into one or both of them.
Can you work out how the drainage is plumbed in? And photograph it?

Thanks everyone
First pipes are from the dishwasher directly, second shows pipes travelling from dishwasher but behind kitchen cupboards.

Hi Avery
Yes they do connect to the same pipe and I be done all the filter cleaning as instructed.

Piglet
They are both freestanding and the water looks to be coming from the pipe area underneath the cupboards

John
They are not right next to each other but close.

Sorry for the grotty pictures I clearly need to do some cleaning too!

@AnchorDownDeepBreath

What did you do to resolve it?!

This is the arrangement

there is an error in the layout of the waste pipes.

Observe that the waste pipes connect to the sink drain, and then go downwards.

This will result in dirty water from the sink running down the waste pipes and into the machines. This is why you sometimes find bacon fat and tea leaves in your washing machine. It is a common mistake.

Also, when one machine is pumping out, its soapy water will run down the waste pipe into the other machine. This can lead to the dishwasher being overfilled with water from the washing machine.

This is easily corrected if you have some slack in the pipes.

Obtain a couple of cup-hooks and screw then into the sideawall of the sink unit (the wall will be 18mm thich, so you can use a screw that does not penetrate more)

Loosen the waste pipes from the spigots on the sink waste and curve them upwards so that at their highest point they are touching the underside of the draining board or theworktop (not the bottom of the sink, which is not high enough)

Use a piece of string or something to hold the waste hoses up so they don't droop down

If there is not enough slack it can be done by cutting a hole in the sife or back of the sink unit. This will need tools and you will need to pull out the appliance so you don't damage it with the saw or drill.

PigletJohn · 28/09/2019 12:56

p.s.

the waste pipe and tap under the sink have been clumsily done, so if you get a plumber in, ask him to fit a new, better one, with no flexible part.

For example this is a good one, if there is room. You see it has two spigots that the waste hoses push on to, and they can be moved to point in a convenient direction.

PigletJohn · 28/09/2019 13:59

waste pipe and trap

Doodlepip1 · 28/09/2019 17:51

Hi Piglot
Very interesting and useful advice
But they will still be connected so wondering how will that stop the water moving between one machine and another?

I guess what I need to ask is it worth calling Miele services or a plumber?

OP posts:
dementedpixie · 28/09/2019 17:58

It's the way they are connected that's the issue. Needs to be more like this so that the waste pipe is higher than the pipe its draining into

Can you run the dw on the hottest cycle? Ours is Miele and blocked once but I ran the 75c cycle and it cleared.

I think it was a fat blockage.

johnd2 · 29/09/2019 14:39

Just to add to the above, the trap is meant to point down on the sink so it retains a little water to stop smells from the drain coming in. Yours seems to have twisted to point forwards, possibly from those unsupported pipes pulling it. So that would need sorted as well.
