UV Oiled or Lacquered flooring? WWYD (or WDYD?)

This is for a kitchen, and by the back door, so possibility of spills and muddy boots too.

If anyone has made this choice and has experience good or bad to share, I would be very grateful!

Lacquered, more hardwearing.

thank you Africa2go

I won't recommend it for a kitchen tbh. I had laquered in my kitchen and eventually took It up and replaced with tiles. It was a Kahrs engineered floor, so not cheap. Marked badly near washing machine as had a couple of leaks there. Also wore a lot in high traffic areas such as in front of fridge and cooker. What about Kardean or Amtico?

thank you StillNumb, I'll have another look

I have oiled flooring in the hall, lounge, kitchen and dining room and it has been fine. No marks or stains so far and its been down a year.

Ooh thanks EmmaC78 - can I ask what make it is?

To be fair, I did have the floor down for at least 15 years before I took it up. I had the same floor in the living room and hall and have only just replaced that, so that did around 25 years. It looked tired and scuffed in places. I was thinking of having it refinished but it wasn't much more expensive to get it replaced. I now have an oiled floor, which is gorgeous. It's only been down for 4 months, so can't comment on durability, but looking good so far. I think if there is wood and water, then somewhere along the line you may get some damage.

Thinking about it, the type of floor you are laying it onto will make a difference. I have solid floors, so if you spill/leak anything onto the floor it has nowhere to go, hence the staining. If you are laying onto a timber floor then it would probably dry out and not be a problem.

GrumpyMcGrumpFace · 29/09/2019 21:33

yes, we are putting it over our timber floors - good point.

We've got oiled, engineered floors (kahrs). They look stunning, but need re-oiling at least twice a year. They mark really easily with dog claws, moving furniture etc and then just generally get really dull through foot fall and rugs. Ours is throughout our open plan living area, and no particular issues with it in the kitchen. Tbh, I'd lacquer if I had the chance again. The upkeep
of oiling is a PITA

I've gone for oiled, engineered herringbone parquet in my Kitchen/Diner/snug. I have also made sure to specify a large coir doormat (ours is 1200mmx1000mm) at the kitchen door to help with mud and footprints etc.

GrumpyMcGrumpFace · 30/09/2019 08:42

thank you - yes I was wondering about getting one of those super doormats from Lakeland. Though a boot rack by the door is part of the kitchen spec for just that reason too! We don't have any animals at home.

Herringbone parquet sounds beautiful Eastcoastdamsel

LateMumma was yours UV oiled initially?
