Questions about Lewes and that area

Okay having ummed and ahhed and changed my mind lots of times I am going to have a look at places a little closer to where we are now so that ds can stay in his school and me in my job.

How is the Lewes area to live in, commute to SOuth London? I could drive and take ds to school each day on my way to work.

WHat do you think?

rhymes with huggers ! East Grinstead might be a possibility

TheMoistWorldOfSeptimusQuench · 12/08/2007 16:38

East Grinstead is really quite nice.
It has the longest continuous row of half timbered 15th century buildings in the UK dontcha know.

LIZS · 12/08/2007 20:21

Town centre isn't that nice (Waitrose is a redeeeming feature, parking good and it does have a cinema at least) but the housing is relativley nice and varied with pleasant villages nearby.

Thanks again for messages. Visited Lewes today and it is a lovely place but the commute would be too much for sure for both of us. East Grinstead wasnt too far away.

WWW - we want to move because we are in a 2 bed modern house and we want a more old fashoined character 3 bed house with a larger more private garden in a more rural area. A lot to ask I know!

We are getting a quote for a loft conversion but the loft is small and as a modern house i'm nore sure they'll be able to do that.

Could you just move slighty further out than where you are and buy a do er upper with potential for conversion/expansion?

hercules1 · 12/08/2007 22:06

Absolutely. Especially if dh is a sahp for a while. It's just finding the damn things!

ah, dh says he knows BH is called BH iyswim, he says the only people he has ever heard of to live there turned out to be criminals

TheMoistWorldOfSeptimusQuench · 12/08/2007 22:14

Cammelia!

My parents have lived there since 1977. Do you think there's something they're not telling me?

Cammelia · 12/08/2007 22:36

I can't answer that MWOSQ

Have your parents got lots of money

Herc, I am sure that property will be out there, it will just take some searching.

But will all the willing property sleuths at MN, let us know where you are now (roughly of course), how far out you are willing to move, what budget you have, and I am sure there will be loads of us searching for you.

Glad to hear you had a nice day out in Lewes!

Hi all. We've been told we can borrow up to 422 but rather not though.

LOft and side extension are not possible so that's out.

I think that as dh wants a career change we may borrow off our equity to pay off credit cards and then we can stay where we are for a couple of years whilst he studies and retrains. We've been told once he is working again then we will still be able to borrow enoguh to buy a place for around 300k and I think we'll stay in our current area.

Ds isoing to a good school and I love my job - too much to risk really.

Good move Herc. There's a lot to be said for good school and a job you like.

I live in Lewes and commute to London by train - it's just over an hour and you always get a seat. It's tougher on the way home but definitely preferable to driving. Expensive though - monthly train ticket is £365. Getting home and seeing the Downs makes it worthwhile.

fiodyl · 15/09/2008 11:05

Lewes is only a 45min commute by train to East Croydon, so its great if you have hundreds of thousnds to buy a house here, while still earning big bucks to spend on the many local shops selling organic lentil sandals and free range tofu armchairs.

On the other hand, if you were born in Lewes and just work in a normal job then you have no hope of ever buying a house here, so have to rot on the workhouse estate instead, where everyone will forget you exist as it doesn't fit with the wonderful image Lewes tries to portray.
