Nice front door/insulation

Our front door is wooden with small, opaque single glazed panels. It's lovely and really suits our house. But it could be better from an insulation point of view.

Can anyone recommend a door company that does nice wooden doors in Cambridgeshire? It needs to look right in an 1860's stone fronted house.

Or does anyone have any tips on how to add insulation to the glass?

We’ve got a stained glass window in our front door. When we first moved it, there was another glass panel in there too (that had been added for insulation) so you could get something like that.
And just make sure it isn’t drafty around the door. That’s probably worse than a small piece of single glazing.

Oh, if you decide to change the front door, then the London Door Company has many styles and they’re lovely quality. Not sure about Cambridgeshire, though.

Thank you. We'll try the extra panel. And getting someone who is better than me to add insulation.

We like the door. It's been there at least 60 years, quite possibly more, so I'm reluctant to replace it.

We hung a curtain up behind ours and put a sausage dog draught excluder down. Toasty.

A door curtain on a portiere rod will be better. You can take it down in summer.

Consider the size of the glass.

I agree you more likely have a draught problem.

The glass is 15 individual panels, so it would be pricey actually.

I love the idea of a sausage dog draught excluder.

It’s worth fixing the draught or seeing if you can have an inner porch fitted.

If you want to add glazing, you can have a single piece cut that overlaps all the panes, and is retained with a secondary glazing type of strip.

To prevent condensation in the gap, ventilare it to the OUTSIDE tiny drilled hole, packed with a scrap of fibreglass to prevent dirt or insects entering.

Seal it from the warm, damp, indoor air.

Most people have never done one of these and will not believe what I say.

If you want, you could have the extra glass panel made of laminated glass, which is very burglar resistant. A local glazier or glass merchant will cut it to size.

Thank you for the idea PigletJohn but the extra glass sounds a bit fiddly.

We'll go with the curtain.
