Paying for work

We are having a woodburner put in. We chose and paid 50% deposit on Saturday in the showroom. The salesperson said that the rest of the balance would be due the day before fitting (I can't remember if he said this before or after we'd paid the deposit).

At the time I thought, that's a bit weird, but now I am really quite uncomfortable with this. I didn't query it and am now kicking myself. We have already paid a hefty deposit of £800 ish so it feels unecessary to pay them before they come.

Can anyone point me in the direction of how to handle going forward with them? Phone and say we won't be doing that?! Are there any laws that I could quote if needed? I'm scared they will refuse to do the work and not give us our deposit.

Cheers.

Pay by credit card.

If you buy a big appliance like white goods you pay in full in advance, why would a woodburner be different?

Thanks, Ripple. Good point about how we don't pay in installments for other goods.

I suppose it's a bit different to one expensive item as it includes the company installing it too - they are putting up a new surround and removing our old fire etc.
