Talk to me about toilets??

Trying to choose a loo, and while I know the sort of shape I want I don’t know which are the good loo brands or if they are all pretty much the same quality wise at the end of the day?

I think the most important thing here is the flush mechanism (can't remember the correct terminology) and waste. We have a decent but unbranded toilet with a Grohe flush ans waste.

Ok, thanks

For me I paid attention to the base as this is often hard to clean around the bolts. If you can't or don't want a wall mounted toilet (fabulous and easy to clean) the pay attention to how they are fixed to the floor.

Old house so going for a round bowl type base rather than wall mounted- but there are lots of options so that is a good point about cleaning

Get one that is a decent height, my mum had a new bathroom a couple of years ago, now having to replace the toilet because it is too low & she struggles to get on & off it.

Nothing wrong with a close coupled toilet (ie not a wall hung one) as I find the underneath of a wall hung loo just another awkward area to clean. Each to their own. Agree with PP though about quality fittings. Grohe is good as is HansGrohe, which may or may not be the same manufacturer.
If you choose wall hung then think carefully about height. Ours was too high and it made it less, errr, thorough to use. Healthier to sit lower (unless you may struggle to get on and off it like PP's DM)

most modern pans have the soil pipe exiting horizonally to go through the wall (HO)

Some go through the floor (BO). Which is yours?

With modern low-water cisterns, I favour WCs from established UK makers such as Twyfords, Armitage, Ideal. Unbranded imports may have an unsatisfactory flush which you will not like.

Thanks for thoughts- looking at armitage at the moment. Soil pipe will need to be horizontal. Have about a week to make a decision.

Oh and check that you can press the flush without closing the seat.

finally

that's a deliberate design to make people put the lid down after use.

why not?
