Radiator cover under window?

Hi, we're in the process of decorating our lounge and under our window we have a large radiator. I think it looks a bit unsightly and would like to cover it with a radiator cover like we have in other rooms of the house. Has anyone done this under a window and does it look ok? The rest of the house has them against walls so they look nice used as shelves etc but here there would be a small gap between the cover and the windowsill so I'm worried it'll look odd. Any thoughts?? Thanks in advance

Just have the shelf? I think we need a photo to give an opinion.

@Mosaic123 sorry a picture would probably help explain it better. So if I put a radiator cover on here I'm worried it'll look strange as there will be the window sill then the top of the cover slightly below. So almost having two shelves

I'm struggling to see what is so unsightly about a radiator TBH. Won't a cover reduce the amount of heat it gives out?

Mosaic123 · 18/09/2019 08:02

I think it looks fine how it is. But if you want to, is there a way to put a wide shelf on top of the windowsill so it extends out over the radiator?

MummyM33 · 18/09/2019 21:06

Thanks for the replies Smile maybe it's just me thinking it needs a cover. Will see how it looks once decorated

Any chance you could let me know if you find a rad cover that fits. I have a similar rad and layout to yours and am struggling to find a cover under 80cm high to fit.

Popchyk · 19/09/2019 12:06

I think it looks fine. It blends into the background because it does not extend out too far.

A cover will make it more prominent. Not keen on this kind of idea in the pic. It looks too fussy, bulky and it spoils the simple lines of the window.

You could try painting the radiator to match the wall if you fancy that idea.

I had a very visible radiator in the living room of my last house. I painted the walls (a nice pale gold colour) and painted the radiator the same colour so it blended in - I used a primer on the radiator before painting.

MummyM33 · 19/09/2019 21:07

Thanks all, the room is about to be decorated and the wall will be painted white so hopefully it'll blend in

Thhat radiator cover is hideous Popchyk. It is far more intrusive and attention seeking than a plain radiator. It reminds me of people who put floral sticky back plastic on wheelie bins. It just makes them stand out and looks so ugly.

I hate radiators, I find them ugly, would much rather they were covered up.

"I hate radiators, I find them ugly"

Underfloor heating instead?
I find radiators very practical.

BettyBooJustDoinTheDoo · 19/09/2019 23:00

I have wet underfloor heating to the newer parts of my house, but in the older parts I have radiators but with covers, they can be practical because they can be designed as a window seat, designed with storage, be part of a dresser, lots of possibilities, but I agree not practical for drying washing or warming towels.

TheCraicDealer · 19/09/2019 23:55

Covers, particularly those with a solid top, reduce the efficiency of the radiator they're disguising- in a room like a lounge where you'll be sitting around and need the heat I wouldn't waste money on one or the extra costs of heating the room. I don't notice radiators but you'd be better painting or replacing it (you should get a shorter model of the same width which might catch your eye less) if it does bother you.

"Covers, particularly those with a solid top, reduce the efficiency of the radiator they're disguising"

Which is why I can't see the point of them. They are no more attractive than the radiator they are hiding IMO.
