Have you levelled your floor before fitting wooden flooring?

The fitter suggests using self-levelling compound to smooth the any unevenness of the current concrete floor.

I looked up and just realise this compound might be near 2.5cm thickness which would be lost as part of the height to ceiling.

We are not keen if losing this height to ceiling considering it's only 2.4m high right now.

What's your experience with the minor uneven subfloor before laying down the wooden planks? Would really appreciate someone to share.

We had this issue.
We just boarded the floor to level it out. Exh did it and they are a couple of spots where the floor sags slightly when you stand on it.

I used self levelling compound when I took up tiles and wanted to lay lino. It wasn't anywhere near 2.5cm thick but meant the floor was smooth for the flooring to go on.

It's called a screed and isn't very thick. Certainly not 2.5cms.

Level the floor! 2-3 cm is so so minor, even in a small room. Your flooring will sag, bow or show gaps and your furniture will slant. I’m renting a house with an uneven floor and it drives me nuts. If you do it now it’s not a massive job, but will be a total pita to do afterwards.

As a floorlayer myself the screed won't need to be 2.5cm (25mm). Usually for flooring purposes it's screeded 3mm to 6mm dependent on how bad the subfloor is. Hope this helps

We did, well DH did! Used a self levelling compound then put wooden flooring down, was quite quick and easy and he hadn’t done it before. A pain but worth it.

I could've used self-levelling but chose instead to use that underlay stuff that is like green boards. (about 8mm thick) used it all over & doubled up where necessary. The old surface was a mismatch of brand-new & original floorboards, sheets of ply & concrete. We put engineered oak over the top & it's perfect.

@ Prettywallpaper, that's part of what puzzles us.

We've already got underlaying sheets (for insulation purpose).

Do we still need to level the subfloor with the pouring compound?
