Fireplace - what do I need to have a fire in it??

Just moved to a house with a fireplace (yay!). We will eventually install a wood burning stove as part of a large renovation project (but not for a year or two). Meanwhile we'd like to have log fires this winter. What do I need? Google searching has revealed a number of perplexing options including grates, baskets, ash trays, spark guards, fire guards, etc. But what do we really need? We don't want to spend loads of ££ as it's only temporary.

A chimney sweep. Then a fire basket and awww.<a class="break-all" href="https://amazon.co.uk/Piece-Solid-Fireside-Fireplace-INGLENOOK/dp/B071KXCXYD/ref=asc_df_B071KXCXYD/?hvlocphy=1007268&linkCode=df0&psc=1&hvnetw=g&hvadid=256159114462&hvpos=1o1&hvdev=t&hvtargid=pla-420300259382&hvrand=3265083281331603840&tag=mumsnet&ascsubtag=mnforum-property-3691699-fireplace-what-do-i-need-to-have-a-fire-in-it" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">amazon.co.uk/Piece-Solid-Fireside-Fireplace-INGLENOOK/dp/B071KXCXYD/ref=asc_df_B071KXCXYD/?tag=googshopuk-21&linkCode=df0&hvadid=256159114462&hvpos=1o1&hvnetw=g&hvrand=3265083281331603840&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=t&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=1007268&hvtargid=pla-420300259382&psc=1 grate

Sorry for the long link.

Definitely chimney sweep first - they will test whether the chimney draws correctly. This is necessary for safety. The chimney should also be swept. Anything you buy you can sell on when you change to a stove in the future.

Thanks, yes - it's been swept recently (we received the certificate as part of conveyancing on the sale), but I will have it done again before winter.

It was more about the 'hardware' that I need within the hearth in order to burn logs. There's an overwhelming array of different types of things (grates, baskets, fronts, 'fire dogs', etc) available on sites selling fireplace stuff and I wasn't sure what was essential rather than just 'nice to have'. As we'll only be using it for at most one winter, I don't want to pay for stuff we don't actually need!

Are the sellers not leaving what they have in situ?
