Who shall install the cooker hood? Our builder, Kitchen Fitter, Electrician

This question must sound stupid.

For a chimney cooker hood, whom shall we ask to install it?

Our builder, or the kitchen fitter, or the electrician...?

Thank you...

Our electrician did ours when we had our kitchen done.

As it's an electrical item, I'd say the electrician

Kitchen fitters do a bit of carpentry, a bit of tiling, a bit of plumbing...

I prefer an expert in her field.

Power is sometimes taken from the lighting circuit, but can be with a fused switch in the row of switches and sockets running along the wall above your worktop.

btw it has to fit to the cabinet run. If you're having cabinet rail the cabs can be inched along a bit for a nice fit; otherwise they will have to go on the wall accurately at about the same time as the holes are drilled for the hood.

you will need a hole drilled through the wall above, usually 125mm dia. any of the tradesmen will have or can get the appropriate tool. It is a bit dusty, so an advantage to do it before filling the room..

Our kitchen fitter did it as part of the install.he had all the necessary electrical qualifications as putting in new sockets fitting hobs etc are part of a good fitters job.

Any of those 3 can do the job but as Piglet points out the supply need to be installed by a qualified person. Mostly a builder or kitchen fitter can do this (it’s actually not a difficult thing to do and anyone can actually do it, but for insurance it needs to be signed off by a qualified electrician). As long as the power supply was installed appropriately during the construction phase, then fitting the hood is a straight-forward matter- I would suggest probably the kitchen fitter would do it, as they will be the ones who then have to fit the splashback, so they will want to set the height of the hood to make that job easy and neat- especially if it’s a tiled splash; cutting tiles (esp if they’re crackle glazed or something) is a nusciance.

I think any electricians or fitters doing electrical bits too need to be part P qualified to work on any part of a kitchen project.

thecapitalsunited · 09/09/2019 13:32

Our electricians installed the power supply and our kitchen fitter installed and plugged it in.

CointreauVersial · 09/09/2019 13:49

Our kitchen fitter (joiner) did it, then called in an electrician to connect everything up electrically and certify it - well, they worked together. Ditto oven/hob etc.

Sorry to hijack thread, but if we need to install extractor on existing kitchen, and itinvolves creating/drilling out a hole for duct, who would be able to do it

PigletJohn · 10/09/2019 01:14

a person who has a core drill and knows how to use it. Most common hoods need a 125mm duct.

The hole will be somewhat above the hood because they mostly now vent out of the top rather than the back

Plumbers and builders will have such a tool because it is also used for waste pipes and flues, electricians will if they are in the habit of fitting extractor fans or cooker hoods (not unusual)

A cutter and heavy SDS+ drill can be hired. They can be bought for between £80 and £500.

They are rather heavy for DIY use and clumsily handled can throw you off your ladder or break your arm. They cut a really neat round hole. If you have an elbow and a short connector you can cut the connector to give an exact fit (see photo). Some canopy extractors have the motor and fan in a box quite high above the canopy, intended to be concealed in a matching top-box. If the hole is a bit too high you just lengthen the connector. If it's a bit too low it is trickier. The extractor should be high enough that nobody can bang their head on it while stirring the porage.

Who shall install the cooker hood? Our builder, Kitchen Fitter, Electrician

This is good timing. I’d assumed my builders would be fitting mine, but it tuned out today that both they, and the kitchen fitters, expected:

  • builders to do the ducting
  • kitchen fitter to fit the hood
  • builders’ electrician to do the electrical connection.

It’s a long process!

Our builder did ours (using their electrician) - it was required for building control sign off which they were responsible for.
