Why isn't our hot water working? Please help

Moved on Friday to our new house. All modern system etc, house only 4 years old. Had baths and showers all weekend no issue

Now suddenly - no hot water. It's a mixer tap and pressure is fine when you turn to the right and cold water flows fine. Turn to the left and nothing. No spluttering or anything, just no hot water - no water at all from that side.

Same for all three bathrooms and the shower and kitchen.

Any ideas at all please?

Oil fired? Are you out of oil?
Gas? Is your boiler firing?

DramaAlpaca · 01/09/2019 20:21

Has the water supply to your hot water tank been switched off accidentally?
In our house it's a red lever on a pipe in the airing cupboard. If it's parallel to the pipe the water is on, if it's perpendicular it's off. At least I think that's the right way round.

Boiler firing just fine and we have gas central heating

@DramaAlpaca we can find a blue lever thing but not red. Looking now

If your house is part of a group of similar new houses, can you go next door and ask the neighbours if there's something you're missing?

dementedpixie · 01/09/2019 20:41

Is it a combi boiler or a boiler with hot water cylinder/tanks in the loft?

Ilikewinter · 01/09/2019 20:43

Does your boiler need topping up...you will have a pressure gauge on the boiler somewhere, if ours drops below a certain level we have not hot water but cold is fine...we have a small black tap attached to the cold filler pipe and we can turn it to top up the boiler....google may be your friend for this!!

SandyDays · 01/09/2019 20:49

We had this problem, we had to bring the water back up to the right pressure in the boiler - YouTube is your friend here - and then remember to turn all then levers back to their original position to get the water back to the taps again.

Initially I didn't turn one of the levers back to its original position and no water would come out of the hot taps.

Looking to see what we have now boiler wise - alas I have a husband who doesn't know either

It's a mega flow eco un vented water heater

No luck yet

Could you put pictures of the boiler and maybe do a call for @PigletJohn

Ilikewinter · 01/09/2019 21:04

Ah so ive had a quick google look and it looks like one we used to have..if it is then we had to find the filler tap to top it up, ours was near to the actual tank rather than the boiler. It literally is a plastic tap that you turn and youll hear the cold water coming in, youll also have a pressure gauge near by to see how much youre topping it up by.

CokeZeroHero · 01/09/2019 21:09

I'll do a photo in a moment - good idea.

My husband has gone up to look at it again and see if he can see a tap.

Problem is he's utterly useless at this stuff and I'm loathe to have him mess about and make it worse. As for me - worse than useless!

It just seems strange that every single tap is fine for cold but nothing for hot. Almost like we've inadvertently turned something off isn't it

Do you have a manual for it?

PigletJohn · 02/09/2019 23:18

Sorry I can't visualise what the cause might be. I would have thought a valve has been turned off, and maybe for a short time water was coming out due to the compressed air in the vessel.

Best thing is to consult a plumber who is qualified to work on Unvented Cylinders (there is a "G3" accreditation that some, not all, heating engineers and plumbers have). With luck there will be a sticker or card showing who installed or serviced it. If not you can call the makers or look on their website, they may have a list of local approved installers.

When you find out, buy a pack of luggage labels, and write on them with permanant marker, and tie one to each of the valves and other controls saying what they are for.

Dizzywizz · 03/09/2019 16:14

Have you managed to get it working yet @CokeZeroHero?

Spam88 · 03/09/2019 16:33

Possibly a silly question, have you actually heated any hot water? That's where we went wrong when we moved somewhere with a system boiler for the first time 🤦‍♀️

PigletJohn · 03/09/2019 16:58

"Turn to the left and nothing. No spluttering or anything, just no hot water - no water at all from that side. "

so there's no water coming out of the hot taps. It's not a problem with heat. There's a HW cylinder. Even if the boiler was off, (cold) water should come out of the hot taps. So it's not a question of pressurising the boiler either.

PrettyFlyF0rAWiFi · 03/09/2019 22:14

Sorry for delay! I've had no WiFi until today as we only moved in on Friday and it's me but a name change!

Plumber came out. It's a broken valve which he showed me. He also called 'mega flo' and the bloody thing went out of warranty 3 months ago. They were actually happy to come out as goodwill BUT we then got out the service record and the plumber who'd serviced it hadn't dated the sheet or signed it! WTF!

So we've had to order a part. Oh and there's some lever in there which should not be there - something to do with if it was knocked, the whole thing could blow up as hot water has nowhere to release pressure

So he got it working temporarily and he will replace this valve on Monday and service the cylinder and boiler.

The cost? £466. Blimey

Does this sound right? I'm not in the slightest bit clued up in these things so he literally could charge whatever he felt like and I would be none the wiser

However he's well reviewed (and not by his mates) and comes recommended and we need it to be fixed sooo....

origamiwarrior · 06/09/2019 14:20

Probably about right if that includes the servicing - we had one of those megaflow things and the annual servicing was much more expensive than a normal boiler. And ours broke down just a couple of days after moving in too!
