Can I return Valspar special mix paint

Bought 5l to paint my lounge. After having a total disaster with the bathroom I'm getting a decorator to do it instead. However he thinks it's poor quality paint and doesn't like using it. It says non refundable on the tin. But in store advertising suggests that you can return it if not happy with it. Is the decorator not wanting to use it grounds to return it?

Nope

oreosoreosoreos · 31/08/2019 13:18

I think it's a colour guarantee they do, so if you don't like the colour you can change it for another, but you wouldn't get your money back.

I've painted quite a bit with Valspar recently, and have been really impressed with it - just emulsion, but the highest grade one they do.

ButtonMoonLoon · 31/08/2019 13:19

Has the decorator actually seen it? I use the gold one, the premium range which is great, but the cheapest one is a bit rubbish in my experience.

We haven't had great results with Valspar. We got some suitable for the bathroom, or so we thought, but when it gets wet it rubs off. We bought ours at B&Q, and I think it's exempt from their returns policy.

MollyButton · 31/08/2019 13:21

I'd be annoyed with the decorator - its very good paint (much better than the stuff used when they painted my kitchen).

But no - you got the paint mixed so no refunds. If you really don't want it there are charities that will use unwanted paint.

ButtonMoonLoon · 31/08/2019 13:23

The cheapest valspar is quite thin hence needs more coats, hence the job will take longer to do.
The gold one is great and has a built in primer so the coverage is much better

Grumpyunleashed · 31/08/2019 13:50

Having had a long paint related chat chat with the man who fitted and decorated our kitchen I now know far more about paint than I ever wanted to.
Evidently (so it must be true) it is not the brand but the quality of the paint you use. Ie in emulsion it’s the ratio of colour molecules to water. Therefore he tells me that “Trade Paint” is best and the cheapest diy store paint is pants though this was not the word used.

We tested this over the course of the last year painting over some shockingly vile feature walls in our new home, think strong shit brown chimney brest with giant yellow flower heads on it and other vile equally strong colours. It took 6 coats of cheap shite emulsion or 2 coats of trade paint.

Basically if it doesn’t say “trade Paint” we don’t buy it.

Replace your decorator. He is paid to use the materials you provide.

Toddlerteaplease · 31/08/2019 14:32

He will use it if I provide it, but he doesn't think it's good quality paint and takes more than two coats. After my bathroom disaster I can see why. The finish is terrible. So I'd rather he use what he knows will give a good finish. I thought it was supposed to be equal to Dulux and crown etc.

It is the gold premium stuff.

We have Valspar Kitchen and bathroom in our kitchen and it's fab. Our decorator commented that it is good quality too so not sure why your decorator is so against it.

duffyluth · 31/08/2019 22:20

@Toddlerteaplease

You won't be able to return it because your decorator thinks it's shit, no.

I think a new decorator is what you need. Bale par will require more effort from him, that is why he is suggesting you return it.

Valspar will accept returns, but not for the reason you want one.

If anyone has a genuine reason to return Valspar the way it's done is direct with Valspar. You contact them, if they decide to accept the return they will issue a voucher for replacement paint and ask you to return the paint to the store you bought it in. The store will return to Valspar. The store can't and won't process a refund. You have to do it through Valspar yourself.

Toddlerteaplease · 31/08/2019 22:34

He's not suggested I return it. If I want him to use it I have to provide it myself. (Though I believe it will be deducted from the bill) If the other brands will colour Match then I'm happy to use them. The finish on the bathroom is by great so I don't want to sate anymore money.

Your OP is asking if you can return it because the decorator thinks it's poor quality 🤷🏻‍♀️

Fettfrett · 01/09/2019 18:41

My husband is a decorator and has always hated Valspar. He did use it for me fairly recently because i really couldn't find the right colour in any other brand, and he admitted it wasn't as bad as it used to be but it still isn't good paint in comparison to trade paint. He hates using diy paint because he never gets as good a finish on it and he's always worried people will think it's his skill rather than the paint.

Toddlerteaplease · 02/09/2019 11:57

I think that's why my decorator won't use it. And since he knows more about it than me I don't want to have to provide it if he really feels it's not as good as the other brands.

DONT USE IT AT ANY COST
We did (had it mixed) and some batches are faulty (preservative) and bacteria can grow on the paint and it’s smells of BO or cat pee 🤮. We painted my poor daughters room and my husband complained and got 4 x the value of the paint in vouchers (sadly for Valspar). There are whole internet threads dedicated to it if you want to look. It’s not every can but enough for people to be very cross.
To put the cherry on top, opening windows makes it worse.
We are now looking at sanding the whole room back to whatever is underneath.
