Advice on pitched roof windows - pics included!

So we are getting a new kitchen as the existing one is falling apart and doesn't work for our families needs.

Issue, our kitchen is dark! It's part of an extension the previous owners built. We have a flat ceiling below a pitched roof with nothing in the space in between. So we're thinking of ripping the ceiling out and putting some windows in to get more light.

However, we have limited budget.

Any experts out there or anyone who has done similar who can give advice on a) ideas and/or b) cost?

Get the biggest velux you can afford. They're reliable, come in a range of sizes ans specifications and last for ages generally.

It's nice to have the option to open it because you can ventilate heat and cooking smells.

Is there a loft/crawl space above that ceiling?

If you can post room measurements it'll help 😀

Get one huge one rather than multiples and don’t have an opening if you want to save money. Doesn’t have to be Velux - all have to comply to high standards. We have just put a large one in a hallway - 1m x 1.8m - was about £1300 to buy. Important that installation is done well by a roofer.

There is! Which is a plus but also my biggest worry as I'd guess there would be a lot of work required to get the internal roof looking half decent.

It's about 5m x 3m.

So one large one on one side of the roof? We were thinking initially two - one in each side. Is that madness?

We have three velux above a single storey kitchen extension, they really change the room.

The only way to do it is get a price from someone who is skilled in roofing, once you know the cost then tailor it to what you can afford.

When the ceiling is removed ensure that the new “ceiling “ is well insulated between the rafters.

Make sure you have windows that open so they can be cleaned (and let out all the flies and wasps that like to gather there).

Even though it’s more expensive I’d rather install 2 velux’s of equal size and spacing over one large one. I think the symmetry of 2 makes it look better. But this will increase your budget.
I also think splaying the reveals or stepping them makes the windows look much nicer and spreads the light nicely.

Our kitchen extension was built with 2 veluxes. Just thought I'd add a pic so you can see. It makes the room so light and we have them open a lot. They are better at venting cooking smells than the extractor. Our neighbour liked ours so had a velux put in his extension as well. I don't know how much it cost but it was a remarkably quick job with the builder/roofer removing the ceiling and cutting the hole for the window and making good.
Ours are splayed to let in more light.
Get some quotes, you won't regret having it done.

Oh didn’t realise that the roof had 2 angles - yes need 2 windows then. Overhead day light is transformative - couple of skylights adds loads more than floor to ceiling windows
