Small dips in floor

Sorry if this is a stupid question!

I’ve noticed some small dips (like little pot holes) in my living room floor under the carpet. How can I know if this is a problem with the flooring under the carpet - obviously I can pull the carpet up but what would I be looking for when I do? And, who do I call about an issue like this, a builder? Or someone more specialised?

Depends on what the floor is made of. Floorboards? Concrete?

What age is your house?
Concrete or wood floors?
Synthetic or wool carpet?
What type of underlay, if any?

I haven't a clue but all this info might help someone more knowledgeable than me

May also depend whereabouts you are - there are known issues in some places where sulfate damage to concrete floor slabs is a fairly common occurrence.

@MeredithGrey1 what happened in the end?

Appreciate this is old but we have similar. From going underneath our house we have discovered that the floorboards which normally sit perpendicular to the joist are actually parallel. So at certain points where two boards meet unsupported by a joist there is a dip. We can fix them by adding support from underneath. I know not everyone can get underneath but it's an explanation that is not a huge cause for concern.
