Has anyone had secondary double glazing made for large original sash windows? It needs to be able to tilt for cleaning. Any recommended suppliers or tips re specification. Thank you.

Crittal used to do the best ones I’ve seen - they open out like a casement so you can ventilate and clean.

I cant see secondary glazing on their website. Do you mean secondary rather than replacement?

Have you looked into companies like Storm windows Ltd, Clearview etc. Lots of information on their websites which may address your queries.

The majority of secondary glazing is made by 3 manufactures

Granada, Clearview and Duration.

With Clearview they offer a DIY supply only so you can get a good idea what the cost of the secondary glazing you require is minus labour.

There are a few firms who do a frameless system which i’m unsure on its performance but looks the business.

If you’re looking at noise reduction the gap between secondary to primary is the main factor. The glass isn’t as important but will improve things in the lower end of the sound spectrum.

If you’re just after heat performance Storm windows may be a better bet due to the system sitting inside the staff beads. Much smaller gap but that’s all that is required for insulation benefits.

I’ve had tons of quotes for windows and secondary. And not sure if it’s my house or my area. The quotes I’ve got back are crazy money.
For example I can get a balanced vertical slider with acoustic glass supply only for £400ish. Most companies want £1200 to supply and install feeding me crap that the window itself is £800/900... Other than them being a bit handier on a mitre saw for the final beading I can’t fathom their huge mark ups! Wanted £3000 for my bay window!

Thanks squirreltamer I have contacted those. We can fit them so no problem with those costs. We are replacing very old style that is too heavy for me to open and cant be cleaned. It covers the staff beads and is fine for noise and insulation. Did you make a decision in the end?

Thanks Arsparsley I have contacted all the companies for quotes and very few replied even with my chasing. All quotes are around £400 a window which is OK but even after speaking to them none were impressing me. My plan was to order one and if OK then order for the rest of the house. However if anyone had personal experience of any of these companies or these types of windows that would be helpful as they are not in locations that are easy to view to compare products.

I’m getting 1 frameless on my staircase and 1 lift out from Clearview on the bathroom. Only 2 areas I can do cheapish for an experiment. The other 2 rooms have huge bays and a large separate window.

If the frameless works as well as the lift out I shall be doing the whole front of the house in frameless but it costs 1300k a window! If they both suck. I’ll just live with single glazing at the front and slimline double at the back.

Should know in a month...
