Prepping walls to paint them...

I'm painting walls for the first time ever. I want to try and do a good, professional looking job.

There are two areas where the walls need some kind of prep but I'm not sure what to do for the best.

Anyone with more knowledge that can help?

Pic 1. A little corner of wall in the windowsill that is crumbling. Should I pick out the crumbled bits and then fill it with filler?

It's plasterboard...

Pic 2. This is the join between the ceiling (top half) and the wall (bottom half). It's a new build and as it's settled there is this ripple type effect. Mostly on the ceiling but comes onto the wall in some small patches.

I was hoping to not do the ceiling but how do I deal with this ripple?

Can I scrape the paint off (I assume it's the paint that is causing the ripple?) and just patch up the ceiling paint in those places?

I literally have all the gear, no idea Confused

Actually thinking about it it won't be plasterboard where that crumbly bit is will it? No idea!

Yes, pick out crumby bits and fill.
I’d get a sanding block and some sandpaper for the ceiling thing.

It is plasterboard by the window.

Remove any lose debris, scrape any lose paint off, clean the area, fill with filler and then sand to a smooth finish.
