I’m going to be a bit vague as I don’t want to damage any possibility of a sale but my relative has her duplex up for sale.
It’s beautifully decorated.
It’s about 50 yds from beach.
You’ll never get a better view anywhere it’s literally to die for
She’s not settled. Doesn’t feel like it’s a forever home and she’s really torn.

You come in the front door to two bedrooms ( both with beautiful view) and a bathroom
Upstairs is huge lounge, kitchen and dining area with wraparound view, and big sun terrace.

She’s really torn as she’s desperate for a garden and has her sights set on a house with a stunning countryside view.

She’s asked me what i think.

I’m torn too but I don’t.like the layout
She lived in one in the same building which I preferred as it was all on one level but no sun terrace

Bearing in mind this is the uk and our days on sun terraces are limited.
Is this enough to make you want to stay. They are early 60 s btw

Such a dilemma because you see that view and it’s like omg...hypnotic
But then she says you get used to it...and she misses pottering in a garden.

It sounds fabulous!

The view. There is a nicer one but don’t want to give too much away

I’m not sure I understand, are you thinking of buying it or is your relative?

Nousernameforme · 24/08/2019 13:32

Depends whereabouts it is. There are some right dodgy areas overlooking the bristol channel and some lovely ones. A view is nice but i wouldnt base a house purchase on just that

funmummy48 · 24/08/2019 13:37

It doesn't matter how lovely the view is, if she's not happy there then she should move. Are you asking from the point of view of prospective buyers, wondering how easy it will be to sell?

cakeandchampagne · 24/08/2019 13:37

The water view is beautiful, but I’d rather have a garden.

IncrediblySadToo · 24/08/2019 13:39

It’s just personal choice - no one can help them decide - unfortunately

I used to live overseas, never more than a 5 minute walk from the beach and I miss it a lot so that proximity & view would sway me a lot.

On the other hand, even with a sun terrace I miss stepping out into a bit of garden

🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️

I don’t know that area so nonidea what’s there/what it’s like there

Also depends what they could buy ‘in the country’ if they sold it.

I’d prefer it on one level too - that’s one of the advantage to living in an apartment from my POV!!

Still, at least they’re choosing between two GOOD options!

Aren't there any houses with gardens and sea views? I'm not from the area but have seen such houses in Kent and Sussex.

RezCowgirl · 24/08/2019 13:52

Bring the garden inside. With a big sun terrace and wrap around views you could fill the area with house plants. You can spend just as long pottering in an indoor garden as you could in an outdoor garden.

steppemum · 24/08/2019 13:53

garden.

a sun terrace would not be a good enough swap for me.
While the view is lovely, pottering around and planting a few runner beans gives me enormous pleasure.

Which is interesting because I dream of retiring to a plcae with a sea view.

BogglesGoggles · 24/08/2019 13:55

Why not just have plants on the terrace/inside?

Dowser · 25/08/2019 09:41

The area is very desirable
(Sorry I got caught up in yesterday’s heat wave)
It ticks a lot of boxes. A small house in that location with sea view and garden is about a £100k more at least And would be a bit too much of a stretch.
The one she’s interested in is about £40k cheaper than this flat..so the small loan they took out can be repaid.

The flat ticks all the boxes except it’s small, it’s on two levels, it gets the full force of nature when the weather changes and has a high maintenance charge.

I feel she’s trying to make it work but her hearts not in it...then you look at that view...

I’d go as I find countryside floats my boat more than the sea. So although I can see objectively the view is nice there are many more that I prefer.

So basically we can all have out opinions but I think she needs to own this and not be influenced by what others think .

nachosTrafficante · 26/08/2019 06:06

View or garden? I'm just moving from a lovely house with no mortgage at 51 to a house with a mortgage so I can get a garden. I'd go garden you can always drive to a view. I nearly stumped up the extra for both vies and garden. But realised that I'd have to work for 5 years more to pay for it.

If she wants a garden now is the age to get one.

HeronLanyon · 26/08/2019 06:50

I think that view would make me want to be outside or definitely have outside space rather than kind of trapped looking at it. It looks rather flat and almost overwhelming to me. So unless I used the beach a lot in all weathers and did some good telescope viewings of shipping/coast/islands etc I would definitely want a garden more.

Wallywobbles · 26/08/2019 13:22

Id have thought it'd be easy to sell and she should get a garden if that's what she wants. However for a forever home for an older person I'd want doctors shops pharmacy etc in walking distance. Being reliant on others is not a good future life choice.
