Waterproofing plywood to iron on?

KatyMac · 23/08/2019 11:33

I am getting a cutting out table and want to use it to iron on too

I have padding and a top sheet but need to cover the ply wood as I think it is at risk of going mouldy from trapped water/steam

So what do I use - primer? oil or water based? hammerite (heat proof)?
Something else?
Help!!

Could you not use the metallised fabric ironing board covers are made of and use that? Yacht varnish on the cutting table top? You'd still need to protect the varnished plywood - use marine ply - as the combination of heat and moisture could penetrate the varnish.

Just found this which might work

That was the kind of thing I meant. You still need to wood varnishing though as it needs to be completely smooth and not snag your fabric. Butcher's block type worktop might be better than ply.

Would marine ply work?

Sorry guys I have the ply

I think I'm going to use that silver stuff 2 layers of wadding cut straight on the edge with a cotton sheet on top coming over the edge stapled in with braid round fixed by upholstery tacks

There should be no edges to snag on (I hope)

At least on 3 sides I the fourth can't go over the edge because of hinges so I guess I finish with the braid flat on the surface

& I'll cover the back with sticky back plastic (how very Blue Peter Grin) or maybe a decorative fabric

OK I got the silver stuff and it's not waterproof at all!

So I am going to put a layer of tent (waterproof), silver stuff (reflective), 2 layers of blanket (padding) and a cotton sheet (looks nice)

Any helpful suggestions for changing that?
