Have you switched from gas hob to induction?

Our gas hob needs replacing. I am teetering on the brink of switching to induction.

Yay or nay?

I hate my induction hob. Gas much simpler, more in control. Can put cold things on the hob top, no annoying beeping or worries about scratches.
Plus, I had to replace all my pans. Hmm
Everyone else on MN normally loves induction though.

I love mine yes....it is so neat as part of a new streamlined kitchen. But yes, you have to be careful they don't scratch and also I had a new set of pans as well

Before you change though, make sure you're electrify supply will cope. You generally need a dedicated feed from the consumer unit. Ours is rated at 30 amps. The reason is ours also has a surge capability which is brilliant. Water boils in no time, stir frying is very quick.

If you do, go for a top end make like AEG

Beebumble2 · 23/08/2019 10:32

We went from a gas range hob to a new house with induction. I love it, so clean and safe. You can set a timer for each area so no more burnt pans.
Some of our old pans still worked, some didn’t. I would not have anything else now.

NannyR · 23/08/2019 10:37

I love my induction hob, very quick, more energy efficient, so much easier to clean than a gas hob. You do need compatible pans but they are very easy to find, chances are that your existing pans are ok. I bought Ikea 365 stainless steel ones.

hsegfiugseskufh · 23/08/2019 10:40

we have. its much prettier to look at and easy to clean.

its very noisy though it makes kind of a vibrating noise (I checked and it is supposed to - I had originally assumed it was faulty!) but I don't know whether they all do this.

I did have to spend more than I would have liked to on new pans.

MissSueFlay · 23/08/2019 11:14

I was a real gas hob devotee because it's so responsive and you're so in control of the heat. We switched to induction when our range cooker finally gave out - we replaced it with a SMEG range cooker with induction hob, mostly because of the energy efficiency. I was expecting it to not be as good. How wrong I was! It's as responsive as gas, no question, and there's absolutely no wasted heat. Our pans all worked (John Lewis ones) and the only adjusting we've had to do is get used to just how fast it heats things! DH says it's a LOT easier to clean as well (I wouldn't know.... Grin)

BelindasGleeTeam · 23/08/2019 11:16

Had both. Without question the induction is better at heat variation, easier to clean and safer.

Not going back!

fairislecable · 23/08/2019 11:16

I loved gas so much that when we moved to an area with no gas we changed the hob to bottled gas.

After using an induction hob in various holiday lets we changed to induction.

I would suggest get the best you can afford as some we tried were awful.

Since having mine my DD tried it and when fitting out her kitchen she has also changed to induction.

RainOrSun · 23/08/2019 11:21

Our house has gas.
We have been renting for the past 4 years. First one was electric element ancient thing, and was pretty crap. Then we got an induction, and OMG it was awful. It was powerless from 1-4, then roasting 5-9. There was no control. Things either took forever or burnt. It was easy to clean tho. Think that's the only positive thing I can say about it (it was probably a very cheep one tho!). Never been so happy to come home and get back to cooking on gas!

Mummyshark2018 · 23/08/2019 11:27

Recently switched from gas to induction. Aesthetically looks so much better in new kitchen island. Functionally I have been impressed. Heats up and cools down really quickly. Easy to clean also!

Imonaplane · 23/08/2019 17:36

I have a Neff induction hob. It's fabulous - so controllable and heats really quickly. The best thing is how easy to clean it is. It never gets hot enough for anything to burn on so just needs a wipe over. Would never go back to a gas hob.

wowfudge · 23/08/2019 18:57

We have an electric induction range and after twenty plus years cooking on gas hobs, this is so much better. Instant, controllable heat. Faster to boil a pan on the hob than boil the kettle. We had a new electricity feed put in for the cooker when the kitchen was redone. It sounds to me as though the pp who found an electric hob and then an induction hob lacked power maybe should have done the same.

The other pluses are that it is so easy to keep clean and gives you an additional work sueface.

minipie · 23/08/2019 19:14

I did a LOT of research and concluded:

  • if you can afford top end, go induction
  • if you can’t, go gas (as budget induction hobs aren’t great)
TaleOfTheContinents · 23/08/2019 19:44

We have a Neff induction hob in our rented flat and I don't like it. I find that it's harder than gas to gauge the temperature and it normally feels like it's not cooking at a high enough temperature or that it's way too hot. My MIL has an AEG induction hob though and she absolutely loves it, so I would say AEG over Neff if you do go that route.

A breeze to clean though!

Chocolate1984 · 23/08/2019 23:11

I reluctantly moved from gas hob to induction and I’m glad I did. I’d never go back to gas.

RandomMess · 23/08/2019 23:17

Had has, then induction back tongas and loathed it was so disappointed as was looking forward to having gas again.

Back on induction and love it. Mine have never scratched? Nice and flat for putting hot or cold things on.

Lindtnotlint · 23/08/2019 23:18

Induction is amaaaaazing (says long time gas hob lover). Do it.

FiveShelties · 23/08/2019 23:25

Yes we went from gas to induction and love it. Just needs a quick wipe over and has not scratched at all. Most of my pans were fine just bought a new frying pan. Would never go back to gas.

ZazieTheCat · 23/08/2019 23:27

Went from gas to induction in last house. On balance I’d say I still preferred a gas hob for cooking, but the easy cleaning of induction outweighs that.

However, have just moved to a house with what we thought was an induction hob. But which turns out to be ceramic. Best of both worlds- easy clean but more intuitive for cooking. Only minor downside it it takes a few seconds to heat up and a few minutes to cool down, but it’s the best of the bunch by far.

BubblesBuddy · 24/08/2019 00:58

I have a Miele induction hob and it’s wonderful. I have a gas hob in our flat and I wish I didn’t! Just feels old fashioned and I always worry about firing it up. It’s a Neff but relatively cheap but they really are a bum to clean.

The Miele induction was expensive but it feels like it and works like it. It has a boost setting for very rapid boiling. It can take a wide variety of pan sizes and it’s 900mm wide. It is just warming on setting 1 and very rapid on setting 9. It’s so easy to clean. It’s not scratched and it’s 9 years old. It’s ultra controllable. Spend the money and you will get a perfect induction hob!

LazyFace · 24/08/2019 14:24

I love induction. I can still make chapattis and since I had steel pans I didn't need to replace any of those. I bought induction pancake pans though as my older ones were non-even from the has hob.

UndomesticHousewife · 25/08/2019 13:31

I love my induction I wouldn't go back. It cleans so easily, there a power boost button to speed up boiling time and I have a timer on all the hobs so it switches off itself. The heat pretty much turns off instantly so no burning.

Kuponut · 25/08/2019 19:19

Love my induction hob - but cleaning the gas hob bits was always a job I hated doing so it was a no brainer really.

W0rriedMum · 25/08/2019 22:43

Another one who loves the induction hob. The gas was annoying to clean and felt more dangerous - I set a wooden spoon on fire once. With induction, my kids can use it happily and it's easy to clean.
